Hi there! My forum or "stage name" is Yonath, who is named after one of Lord Dunsany's most sympathetic characters. He is my favourite fantasy writer. During the day I usually work as a psychiatrist in Tasmania. I am also an Addiction Medicine Specialist.

I have never been diagnosed by another doctor as having bipolar disorder, but I recognise in myself the typical symptoms of hypomania having occurred during two separate episodes 18 years apart, with a low-grade depressed picture in-between during which I am a hard-working sort. My current symptoms are; heightened creativity (now with several really good guitar tunes composed), ability to rally my psychiatrist colleagues behind a shared and important cause, impudence, improved sense of humour, rapid processing, ability to dominate a conversation when indicated, increased speech, general randiness, and some vaguely mystical experiences here and there. The current episode is still ongoing but started a couple of months ago without major consequences to my employment or livelihood. Being more sociable than usual I am happy to post about it in these forums.

Given that I am very much enjoying my current state, I am hoping to maintain it for several years into the future!

I am going to see my GP tomorrow because there has been a lot of stress at work recently and I need a few days off before going back Monday next week.

Hi Yonath

Welcome to bb and thank you for sharing your story.

I've been participating here for more than a year and have found the forum to be a place of kindness and non-judgemental support--hope your experience is positive too.

Good luck with your GP and working through your stressful time. Sometimes a little extra support and rest is just what we need. Be kind to yourself.

Kind thoughts to you

Dear Yonath~

I'd like to join Summer Rose in welcoming you here, also thank you for introducing me to Lord Dunsany, soldier, fantasy writer, associate of Yeats and Kipling, and crack shot. A most interesting gentleman.

I'm glad you are enjoying life at the moment and sympathize with your experience of a low grade depressed picture over a long term. I'd imagine considering your occupation and specialization that must make it hard at times

Your original namesake prophesies "only seek not concerning the wherefore of the making of the gods." May I ask if you feel it is unnecessary to see your own doctor with a view to confirming your diagnosis?

I do not pretend to know enough about mania, hypomania, depression and bipolar to ask intelligent questions but do wonder if it might be useful to have an outside perspective on the effect your current elevated mood might be having on your judgment in general.

Please excuse me if my question seems intrusive or exhibits lack of understanding.

The reason I ask is with a completely different set of mental conditions I find the opposite, my judgment is at times skewed towards the the worst possible outcomes and I do not realise this until another gives me a more realistic view. Without that external view I might act as if my own beliefs were fact, which on many occasions would have been unfortunate.

On another matter you might find one of our long-term threads of interest

It has been going for around 4 years and though long contains many people's views and feelings.

I echo Summer Rose's kind thoughts
