Hello everyone

Hi!

I am a young adult currently studying psychology and wanting to connect with others.

Personally, I have suffered from swings of anxiety and depression all through adolescence and am still on my journey to better mental health. Sometimes people don't understand me for wanting to become a psychologist with my history of mental health struggles but I think it will make me all the more understanding of the client. I am particularly interested in working with young people in all areas. I am looking forward to being more active on this forum and getting to know others.

Hi alym20,

Wellcome to our forums.

I'm sorry that you have experienced anxiety and depression I understand that you are on your journey.

Are you currently receiving help from professionals?

I think it's great that you are studying psychology I think that you have a great perspective of wanting to study  psychology because if you have experienced mental health conditions I believe that you will have a better understanding of the client.

I understand that sometimes people don't understand what we want to do but it's really none of their business you know what you want to do and that's all that matters you don't need to explain yourself to others.

I think it's great you are looking to be more active on the forums, I'll look forward to seeing you around the forums and getting to know you more.

Hi alym20 and a warm welcome to the BB forums,

It's FAN FAIRY TASTIC that you're studying psychology and I agree with you when you say: "I think it will make me all the more understanding of the client".

Well done you for creating a clear goal and sticking to it regardless of others' opinions!
I was only thinking of this very point today in regards to my own life's path.... IF I HAD allowed others' opinions to sway me (and a % of times they did!) then I would never have achieved the education I have, the career I've had and still have, the children I have and also not even the property and financial "security" in the form of Super I have. Not even our pets lol.
This all required my sheer, singular focused determination for long durations of my life and ... it was worth every second of my dedication.

I don't doubt for a moment that pursuing a Psych degree will be difficult at times. If it was easy, then everyone would have the same degree lol. It takes discipline to achieve any degree.

I truly believe that if MORE MH professionals had struggles with MH similar to their clients then the landscape would be much kinder and more responsive to our needs. I hope MORE people follow your lead!

Congratulations and I wish you the very best for your future studies and MH goals also,
EM

Hi ecomama!

Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it.

I agree that if more MH professionals had first-hand experience with mental health it

would create a more understanding environment.

I hope to see some more positive changes in the MH community in the future 🙂

Welcome alym20 😊   psychology is a fascinating field to explore, which also comes with lots of challenges, I wish I can learn more about it.

Totally agree that your experience with mental health struggles would help you on understanding the client, but be sure to take care of yourself🤗, I think burnout happens a lot in this kind of profession. Feel free to share more of your stories. 🙂

Hello alym, hi and welcome, if I can put it this way, you wouldn't ask a painter who has never done so before to paint your house because they wouldn't understand what to do, the same applies with studying and then qualifying in psychology, they then have been through MI themselves and have learnt an enormous amount and are much more tuned into what a client has to say to them.

Your participation on the forums will give you a good insight into how people are suffering and the suggestions offered from those who have been through this themselves.

Hi alym20

nice to meet you 🙂 I’m also studying psychology and have similar experiences with mental health - at least I’ve walked the walk before talking the talk 😛

its a smart idea to interact here. I know I find it helpful, as it makes me feel less alone and also gives me the opportunity to practice social skills.

good luck with next semester, it’s a hard degree so I know you are smart and dedicated 🙂

Thank you for your response,

Burnout is definitely likely in this profession so I will strive to put self-care first always!
