Cyber crime trauma

Deak
Community Member

Hi

I'm new to these types of forums. Never used them before.

I am currently dealing with the effects of trauma of losing money to cyber scammers.

Feeling ashamed and embarrassed and blaming myself as I feel I should have known better. They just seemed so convincing and knew things I had not told them about my situation. Emotionally distraught at the loss.

Wondering if anyone else out there has had similar issues and how they coped.

Hi Deak,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for being here and reaching out.

I'm sorry to hear that you've lost money to scammers; while I haven't experienced this myself I can imagine that if it happened to me I would be feeling all of these things too.

While I'm not sure if I can be helpful, I do want to say that it's very easy to say you should have known better, but this isn't your fault. They probably did seem convincing because they can be very smart; they spend their lives working on being clever and fooling people. It doesn't matter how young or old you may be, it's very easy to become victimised to these situations.

I'm not sure if you'll find other people who have been through this experience here, but know that they are out there - there are so many people who are in the same boat as yourself. If you do need some extra support though, don't be afraid to reach out to a therapist. They too can help you process the trauma but also remind you that while your feelings are valid, this isn't a reflection on you.
