HI

I have been looking into a disorder called BPD (borderline personality disorder) the symptoms seem to fit me perfectly have been on Anti ds for years but maybe it's not depression but BPD .Have been on a couple of tablets - one to help me sleep - for about 11 years but they are not having the effect they used to. I know i need to speak to the doc about it she tried me on different meds a few years ago with disastrous results.(also have terrible anxiety).Would like to know if anyone knows about BPD and are there Doctors in Australia that specialise in this disorder I live in Central coast area and mental health services seem limited.

Any info would be appreciated

Hi Dasher,

I've recently been diagnosed with BPD. I'm 41 so it came as a bit of a shock and I have to say its taken me a little while to accept it (various reasons, long story...).

The biggest turning point for me was getting to see a psychiatrist who specialised in mood disorders. You can get one free session with a psychiatrist through medicare you just need a referral from your GP. Once you get a diagnosis from the psychiatrist they will also prescribe the correct medications. Again this has been really helpful for me - I was previously on two types of anti-ds but now am only on one and a mood stabiliser.

In terms of finding a good psychiatrist my psychologist helped but it was really about finding someone local and who specialised in those disorders. The one I see also is situated at a hospital (private) where they run a DBT program so she was also able to give me a referral to start that therapy too.

I hope that helps 🙂

Hi Dasher,

I experienced the same thing, being treated for depression but it not quite working and something just felt missing. Six years later I was diagnosed with BPD and it was a relief and gave way to more appropriate treatments. I have a lot of experience now in seeking out specialists with experience in BPD and diagnosing it, and if you would like me to, I can help you find a way through for you too. I had to go far from home to do so myself. I understand how painful and chaotic at times BPD and similar symptoms can feel when experiencing them. BPD is linked to environmental experiences and in my experience, my childhood trauma, which can result in emotional distress. I have since learned how to handle my distress, be more mindful and regulate my emotions, and if you would like the support, I can support you by sharing these or simply listening to you.

I understand every word you said, and hope you know you are not alone.

Be well,
