Hi everyone. I'm new even though I'm old (ish). Anxiety about anxiety is my anxiety. Don't they say "there is nothing to fear but fear itself"? I'm starting to learn about the intricacies of how our brains work through a book I'm reading. It's fascinating and enlightening and helping to diffuse the shame I've felt about what I have always seen as a weakness.

Hi Babyboomer,

Welcome to the forums 🙂 I find them a great place to come and share advice and stories, and ask for it too. As ironic as anxiety about anxiety sounds, it is common I'm sure! I also suffer from anxiety, though I've been doing well lately, thanks to gradual changes in my lifestyle, a whole heap of willpower and the help of my psychologist.

I too find it useful to read self-help/psychology books and speak to my psychologist about the 'tricks' the brain can play on us. It is reassuring to understand why we feel certain ways some times and encouraging to know that we can train our brain just like a muscle. What book are you reading?

I have just finished 'You Are Enough' by Cassie Mendoza, which was a nice reminder to be kind to yourself

Cheers,

Janey

hello Babyboomer, you can read a lot of information on what anxiety is and how it's caused, but sometimes you may need medication to help you with it, plus some counselling, both of these work together, and no it's certainly not a weakness and please never consider it as so.
There is so much to read on BB about anxiety and if you go to that section then there will people telling us about their own suffering, this may even help you further, but I also suggest that you go and talk with your doctor, so then you will be able to get the help you need.
I am also one who has anxiety and for me this has caused OCD which is another extension from this illness, so we hope to hear back from you. Geoff.

Hi Jeff, thank you for your post. I will check out BB. I'm all sorted with a doctor and was on a low dose of meds, and doing really well until recently. However, it seems an accumulation of events during the past few years popped me over my stress threshold resulting in breakthrough anxiety. My Dr has increased my meds a notch, and I'm making some well overdue lifestyle changes as well. Thank you for your encouragement.

Hi Janet, Lovely to hear from you. The book is titled, Rewire Your Brain, Think Your Way To A Better Life, by John B Arden. I'm also learning the importance of being kind to my self and loving my self. Not that easy though! I think I'm often much nicer and kinder to others than I am to myself, but I'm working on it! It's really good that you are doing well. I too am going to make some well overdue life style changes, ie Exercise and socialise. Now to find my willpower!

Have a great day.

Babyboomer.

Hi Janey. My apologies for spelling your name wrong. Not a very good start on my part is it?

Kind regards

Babyboomer.

No worries, I didn't even notice the t instead of y!

Sounds like an interesting book, will have to add it to the list, thanks.

Oh boy does it take some willpower! Ha!

Best Wishes Babyboomer!

Hi Babyboomer and welcome,

Anxiety about anxiety, yes i understand. I too enjoy reading books to try and understand how our brain works and how it can trick us. Like you i also think I am weak at times when I have anxiety an just want to run from my 'problems'. Whilst we may feel weak on our own we can definitely find strength together.

I see you have found the BB cafe too, hope you can find the cafe a place to chill out and relax away from the hard stuff that we all go through.

To look forward to seeing you around the forums.
