Transfer of prescription from Psychiatrist to GP

Hello!

I have had ADHD since I was 7 (28 now). I have been off medication since I turned 18 but feel it's time to go back on it. I had an assessment for Adult ADHD for which I passed. My Psych prescribed me long acting and short acting medication. That is all well and good but I have Coeliac Disease and can not eat Gluten. I can't consume the short acting medication. I did make this clear to my Psych but he failed to prescribe me the correct outcome.

My Psych wants me to come back so he can prescribe me a new drug. I don't want to spend another $400 for his mistake.

I was recently told that you can request that a Psych transfer their care to a GP.

I was wondering what peoples experiene are with this?

Dear Defqonnner~

It's very annoying when a professional prescribes contra-indicated medication despite being given all pertinent facts. In some circumstances of course it can be dangerous. Here I'm talking in general, not specifically about you. I'm no doctor and could not judge.

Do you mind if I ask how you found out these meds were inappropriate?

I guess this all depends on how strong you feel and how far you want to take it. It can seem a bit daunting.

can see that the psychiatrist may consider an alternative medication may not be a straightforward matter in some circumstances and feel the need for a second consultation.

How do you feel about  giving the psychiatrist's rooms a ring and suggesting as the medication was given in error would they consider a complimentary or scheduled  fee (so there is no gap to pay) consultation to set the matter right.

If your GP is the cooperative sort a visit and gaining advice there may simplify matters

Do you think either of these approaches might be OK?

Hi Defqonner,

Welcome to the forums and thank you for your question. Similar to you I have been off and on psychotropic medication for a long time. $400 seems to be a lot to spend on medication. Without saying the specific medication, do you know if this is the PBS price? Alternatively you can also get a health care concession card if you are eligible. I have a low income health care card that makes most medication really cheap and sometimes free. You can check it different types of health care and concession cards here: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/concession-and-health-care-cards?context=60091

I've never asked for my psychiatrist to transfer care to a GP. I personally would avoid this as in my case, my psychiatrist knows way more about my mental health diagnosis and all the nuances involved. Some GPs have very minimal mental health knowledge/experience as they are more accustomed to referring to specialists. I have however asked my GP to prescribe me medication that my psychiatrist has prescribed instead of going back to my psychiatrists. Most GPs are happy to do this as long as they have communication with your specialist.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
