SSRI - weight gain

I’ve been on an Anti-depressant for a few months and I have noticed that in that time I have put on quite a bit of weight, I’ve been on two other SSRIs before that but didn’t really experience that side effect.

I had just put down my weight gain due to my eating/exercising habits even though I have been trying to work on both of those things, the weight gain is still happening and it only just occurred to me that this could be due to side effects of that SSRI.

Also to add onto this it was more of a sudden and rapid weight gain rather than a slow one over time.

Maddie

have you spoken to your doctor about your concerns. Some medications can cause weight gain .

Hi maddie faye,

Some antidepressants do cause weight gain……….

I’m aware also that some don’t.

If the weight gain is causing you concern maybe have a chat to your gp.

Hello Maddie, can I ask whether the 2 previous SSRI you were given were on the max. dose and now you are concerned you should talk with your doctor once again.

Hi maddie faye,

some SSRIs do gain weight, my school psychiatrist told me about this, but this never occur to me. You may talk to your GP about this, sometimes switching drugs under guidance could help.
