Run out of subsidised sessions from my MHP. Any other options?

Hey,

Sorry if this isn’t really the place for this post. Feel free to delete it if it’s not.

So ive got a mental health plan from my GP which has totalled to 10 susidised sessions with my psychologist.

I’ve been seeing my psychologist bi-weekly since the beginning of the year and today he informed me that I’ve have now run out of subsidised sessions. I’ve been paying $37~ with my rebate, and next time I come in the cost will raise to $120.. Which is way too much for me to afford as I am really struggling financially at the moment (my anxiety and depression being the reason)

Financial struggles have been a major issue for me. I’ve been really struggling to pay for rent and day to day expenses... added with this on top it’s got me really overwhelmed.. and without the support of a doctor I’m really worried I’ll just fall in a heap.

Anyway, I was wondering if there’s any other options I can use outside my mental health care plan that will gain me more rebates?

If not I will probably have to stop going and I really am worried about that.

Thanks for your time.

Hey Mark and welcome to Beyondblue. Yes you have chosen the correct section of forums to post this particular question in.

Its not cheap to see a psychologist is it? Even with a MHCP, I too have to pay a hefty top up amount over and above the Medicare subsidy. I see a Clinical Psychologist for which I get back a Medicare subsidy of $124.50 per visit, but still have to pay an additional $40.50 each time I see her. So it definitely adds up when you already have financial difficulties. I'm really sorry to hear its taking a toll on you. But especially now, its very important that you are able to continue to seek appropriate psychological assistance.

Like you, I have almost used up all my 10 x Medicare subsidised MHCP sessions. I saw my psych today and she informed me that I only have one more session remaining. And there is still a long way to go before any more become available next year. I went into panic mode I have to say. She has been literally my life line now for the past few months.

Anyway what she told me is that I would qualify for ATAPS and she will look into it for me once my last MHCP session is completed. As I understand it ATAPS is generally used for short to medium term issues, but can be used for long term problems if the need is there. You would need to qualify for it by way of an income test. Perhaps it could be an option for you?

I would suggest you ask your psychologist about it, or else google it for further information. I was only told about it today, so have not done so as yet.

I hope we can both work something out. You say you dont have the support of a Doctor? Any reason for that?

Meanwhile you are very welcome to browse other threads here on the Forums and get to know other members here. You will find us all to be pretty friendly, helpful and supportive. You may find it beneficial to have someone here to talk to.

Hey Mandy,

Thanks for the quick reply and the welcome! I will look into ‘ATAPS‘ and discuss it with my Psychologist.

I feel I have made some steady progress with my Psych but he would agree there is some ways to go. So facing 6 months without that support is a very daunting thought like you said.

Anyway, Thanks heaps for the advice I appreciate it and good luck with your sessions.
