Herbalist?

Have had major anxiety issues for 6 weeks. Am almost 6 weeks pregnant. Psychiatrist just put me on my old SSRI but the midwife at my OBGYN's office gave me a number for a Herbalist. Wondering if anyone has benefited from a herbalist concoction for anxiety versus SSRI?

Hi Hannah,

The SSRI has been prescribed by your psychiatrist, and I'm sure you can trust their judgement. They have an obligation to ensure they do what's best for you as their patient/client. As you've had this SSRI before, you know your body responds well or adequately to it, and that it doesn't cause unpleasant side effects. However, you could go to your doctor (GP) for a second opinion, and hear what they have to say about taking SSRI's during pregnancy.

The midwife would have been well-meaning, but remedies provided by practitioners such as naturopaths and herbalists have not been scientifically proven as effective for mental health conditions such as anxiety. Visiting a herbalist won't do any harm as such, but the products given are very unlikely to have a significant positive effect on your anxiety. I've had anxiety (OCD) for 10 years, and I've been taking an SSRI for between 3 and 4 years now. I went to a naturopath in 2012 to help with my poor energy levels (in part due to anxiety). The practitioner did not provide me with consistent care and would try different combinations of natural supplements and powders. Practitioners such as herbalists and naturopaths (I went to a herbalist when I was a kid by the way) don't have a consistent or necessarily proven strategy for treating patients. There is a lot of trial and error, in my experience.

The decision is yours of course. I am no expert on naturopathy or herbalism, but I would advise you to take caution with relying too heavily on treatments and ideas given by these practitioners. Seeing your GP and keeping them up to date with your health is crucial. Seeing your psychiatrist about your medication if you are concerned or need more information is also a good idea.

Best wishes,
