Electroconvulsivetherapy

Happy_Feet

My adult son is about to undergo electroconvulsive therapy after years of fighting depression and suicidal thoughts. He has the support of his family. He is splendid and his life matters greatly to us. Has anyone else walked through this therapy with their son? If so, did you see lasting benefit?

Hi Happy Feet,

Your son sounds like such a special and brave person. Also, I feel he’s very fortunate to have such incredible support from your family. You sound like a very loving parent who just wants to see him start to feel better and thrive, and that is truly precious...

Sorry, I don’t know too much about ECT but there’s a BeyondBlue thread called ECT - my experience that you might find helpful as a forum member here has detailed his/her personal experience with ECT.

If you type “ECT my experience” in the BeyondBlue search, you should be able to find the thread.

I hope this helps a little and please feel free to write in again if you would like to continue talking, ask questions, etc. You’re most welcome here 🙂

Kindness and warmth,

Hello Happy Feet, a warm welcome.

I also don't have any experience of ECT, although I was very close to having it myself, but once I arrived at hospital 2 or 3 doctors ( hard to remember how many ) spoke to me and decided not to have it, but I know how scared you must be feeling.

I really wish I could tell you from a personal incident, but can I say that we are here for you and your son all the way, and will definitely want to help you through this.

Please get back to us.

Geoff.
