Hello AnotherOne.
It’s true that like all medications there can be some side effects and that they can be physical. Some are more common than others depending which medication you’re on and the dosage. It kind of depends what physical symptoms you’re talking about. You’re doing the right thing by talking to your doctor about it. I wonder if it would help to take a list of what you’re experiencing so that you and the doctor can go through it one at a time. It might put your mind at ease to break it down and feel like it’s more in control than just one big issue.
Something that might also be helpful is to talk to your Pharmacist about what you’re experiencing. They’re usually pretty good at explaining what to expect and can also give you print-outs of the official medication information. Something to be aware of though is that the list of potential symptoms is often very long, but that doesn’t mean that they’re common side effects, or that they shouldn’t be checked by your doctor if you experience them.
In my personal experience with SSRIs, yes I’ve experienced physical symptoms. In particular it affected my sleep (vivid dreams, night sweats and insomnia). Different SSRIs have also caused me nausea and headaches. I checked in with my doctor about these and was put at ease. Also, over time (weeks) the side effects mostly disappeared as the medication settled in my system. There was one medication where I kept having side effects though and my doctor instructed me to start coming off it. Each medication affects people in different ways, and sometimes it takes a few trials to find one that will help your mental health and also be tolerated well by your body. But don’t be discouraged, it’s a common occurrence.
I hope this helps. Please stay in contact with your doctor as they are in the best position to help. But also know you’re not alone in this. Take care.

Hi AnotherOne12,
I would not necessarily say increased symptoms, but other symptoms. Also, when you read this, please note that I am just another user on the forums, and the content below is just what happened to me.
It is important to read the documentation that comes with the medications. I know that it takes some weeks for medications to take effect. I also read the list of side-effects the medication has. Now the first medication I was given was an SSRI, and I would get a moving, creeping skin sensation, some of other more serious side effects, and did little for the physical symptoms. Unfortunately this was all in the initial 4-6 weeks of starting. So I persisted. When I next went to psychiatrist we chatted about the medication ....
....and eventually changed medication. The other thing was that when I was prescribed the first AD I was then referred to a pstychiatrist - to a person with greater (?) knowledge about medications and mental illnesses - at least for me. I hope some of this helps.

Hello
The doctors believe that a specific AD will be able to help us, but we never know until we have tried it for a few weeks because what happens to our own body and this medication is only something we won't know until we have that experience.
What the book says doesn't suit everyone as I've had to have the experience of.
Best wishes.
Geoff.

Hi there AnotherOne12,
Welcome to the forum. You will find you questions on SSRIs and side effects are quite common. This is largely because people respond to them so individually. It can depend on a wide variety of factors. Internal factors include your metabolism, you body chemistry, you liver function etc. etc. etc. Each of us are different in how we process medication in our body. External factors include other mediations we are taking at the same time, what time of day we take the medication and with or without food, any changes to your mood/worry that has occurred etc. etc. etc.
Having different sensations in your body when starting a new medication is not uncommon but should be monitored by your prescribing Doctor. You might find your self visiting your Doctor with more regularity when starting a new treatment and this is normal. smallwolf, Geoff and AlexLisa all have great suggestions such as keeping a side effect journal that you write in each day to bring to your next appointment or visiting your local Pharmacist and make an appointment to review your medication with them. They can go over what type of side effects are typical and educate you on your on your medication in a more personal way.
I look forward to hearing how you go with your symptoms and if you had any further success with your GP on getting a more informed medication review. If you are uncomfortable with the information you are being given by your GP, you could always ask if there is another GP in your area who has a special interest in mental health medication that you could visit for a second opinion or as smallwolf suggested, get a referral to a Psychiatrist.
Wishing you the best possible outcome,
Nurse Jenn
