Cold Showers = Hours of relief

Hi all,

As someone suffering depression and anxiety I know just how hard it can be to get your self to do anything. One thing my therapist recommended recently is cold showers, and well.. it works (for me at least - maybe for you too). Pretty simple.. have your normal shower then finish 2-5 minutes of cold. It hurts..real bad (not as bad as depression though) but I notice a solid mood boost for between 2-5 hours.

The other thing that is helping me is exercise... the more intense the better.

Hope this helps someone out there.

That is kind of you to take the time to offer these couple of suggestions RegularJoe. I actually like cold showers, they are very invigorating, and refreshing.

In appreciation to you

Hello Joe

Welcome to Beyond Blue. Thanks for your comments. I cannot speak for having cold showers, just the thought makes me shiver. Exercise is a different matter. Lots of research has gone into this and there is a heap of evidence to associate exercise with an increase of energy and motivations. Good stuff.

They would make me do this in hospital quite often 🙂 the nurses said 12 mins in the cold water resets the body and you no longer panic. I found I was shocked out of the panic quite well and either went into vigorous exercise to warm up and then crash out or just be in quiet shocked state for a few hours. Either way it did stop the panic, and turned it into something else to focus on. Im glad it works for you 🙂 I will keep them in mind over the christmas period too.
