Hi 1958,
Thanks for posting and sharing. It can be hard to know what to do when supporting someone through a depressive episode in bipolar. You have done a great thing in coming here. I have found some great information online about bipolar and treatments on the black dog institute website that might help shed some light on things for you: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/resources-support/bipolar-disorder/
Here is a fact sheet on treatment: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Treatments-for-bipolar-disorder-fact...
It may be worth also keeping a mood chart: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Mood-chart-for-bipolar-disorder.pdf
How are you coping? It is important if you are feeling scared that you get support for your own health. In that regard carer gateway is a great resource that offers confidential support and advice to people caring for others with mental health issues. Give them a call if you need help or check out their website: https://www.carergateway.gov.au/
It might be helpful going through some of the black dog resources with your son if you're both scared or uncertain about what to expect.
Hope that helps and please keep us posted.
Bob
