Hi there Tien,

I suspect there are as many ways to improve depression as there are people.

I spent about half a year in a private psychiatric clinic as a teenager with depression. It worked for me. The positives were that I was safely separate from the world with the distractions of therapy, peer support from the others there, I couldn't avoid the appointments with the psychiatrist because they came to me. The negatives were that I was not allowed outside the unit for a while, there were restrictions on family and friends, no one there was from the same cultural background as me (everyone spoke English only), and I lost touch with school and work.

Since then I have preferred to cobble together my own plan for rehab. I make sure I go to my GP, and see a psychologist. I get involved in exercise. Spend time with my community and watch listen to all the Welsh language film and radio. I also do the little things I enjoy normally when not depressed such as gardening.

It would be interesting to hear what you have found and what ends up working for you.

Rob.

Hi Tien,

Be careful where you choose to go to clinics and the reason you are going.

If you are going purely for talk and program therapies, I wouldn't see you having too many problems with that.

For anything else, steer clear or at least research thoroughly where you are going. The private facilitators of these programs aren't always the "retreats" they market themselves too be.
