advice for finding a psychiatrist

Hi,

I have just moved to Sydney and I need a psychiatrist. I have been referred to a clinic but there is a $200 gap after medicare. We can't really afford that. Does anyone know of a psychiatrist that won't cost me the earth? Also if possible, someone that has a background in abuse and ptsd.

Thanks.

Hi Lauren,

The beyondblue Practitioner Directory lists a range of mental health professionals (including GPs and psychologists) but does not list psychiatrists. This is because all the practitioners listed on the Directory can be accessed without a referral. However, in order to see a psychiatrist a referral from a GP is needed.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry (RANZCP) provides GPs with access to the Psychiatrist Referral Directory (this is not available publicly). The best course of action would be to go back to your GP and explain your situation to see if there is another alternative.  You can also call our support service on 1300 22 4636.
