This is two fold, firstly I myself do not suffer from depresssion, my wife and two teenage daughters do though hence my title, whilst as a family we are doing our best to get the right medical help and advice I am the one lacking support which is why I joined beyond blue, hoping to get help and advice not only on my family but how I can manage myself, it's been an extremely rough year and looking foward to chatting

Hi Dadwatching,

Welcome to the forum - you have come to the right place for advice!

Good on you for recognizing that you also need support. Caring for and supporting even one person with mental illness can be tough, let alone three. Your two daughters and wife are very lucky to have you. I am glad you have been seeking professional medical advice as a family. Hopefully your daughters and wife have found the right combination of support. It's often helpful to see a GP as well as a psychologist, for example.

I'd like to direct you to a resource that you can recommend to your family. It's about working through the symptoms associated with depression. It may be more helpful for one of your family members than another, depending on what stage they are at with their depression, and whether active self-help is achievable for them right now. Here is the link: http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resources/infopax.cfm?Info_ID=37

I recommend reading the info on this site under Supporting someone (on the menu bar).

Here you'll find advice about being a carer: http://www.mindhealthconnect.org.au/carers

This site is about how you can look after your own health and needs: https://www.carergateway.gov.au/

I hope coming here has been helpful. It would be great to hear back from you 🙂

Best wishes,

Zeal
