Tips on balancing uni, work and just life in general

Guest_322

Hi,

I haven't been in the best state of mind recently- mostly feeling down but sometimes it's up and down in short periods of time.

I'm at uni full-time and work part-time. I want and need to do well academically (my course requires maintaining certain grades). But I have found that trying to achieving those grades can take its toll on my mental health.

So I guess what I'm trying to ask is does anyone have tips for doing well academically AND taking care of your mental health at the same time? Like how to balance the 2? Thank you!

Hi kbkman,

I appreciate your thoughtful, helpful post. Thank you!

I like the reminder to maintain some semblance of a balanced lifestyle with healthy sleeping and eating habits (both of which I'm often guilty of neglecting!)

I'm glad you've such a great support system in your partner- helps a lot, I imagine. I've some friends that I sometimes study with and they can be motivating.

Thanks again!

HI Dottie and everyone

Everyone has baught up great points. So I'll try not repeat anything

When I worked at Uni, I was lucky enough to get my work time table a little in advance. I would put in my diary when I had work and when assignments were due. I would try not leave my assignments to the last minute and the day before it was due I would only want to be editing it, not still doing it. If I had work Thursday night and my assignment was due Friday, I would try either have my assignment finished on the Wednesday night or during the day Thursday. If people asked me to cover shifts I would always look at my diary first and assess if I had enough time to finish my assignments (or study) and take on the shifts, if I couldn't I just didn't take on the shift. I know it is hard to say no, but sometimes you just have to put yourself and uni first. Also if you just need a day off work and someone asks you to work just say no because you need to have time for yourself.

I also registered for disability services. When I heard about this service originally I thought it was only for people with physical disabilities, not mental health. But mental health does allow one to register. They can go over an academic plan with you and if you need an extension they can help you process it properly so it is approved. I would look into this if you feel like it is something that could help you. It is a great safety net to have. Although I never need to get my assignment time extended it felt like I had the universities support which gave me more confidence in myself.

Hope you may have found this helpful

Hi Purple,

Thank you for the really thoughtful advice.

It was a great reminder of work-life balance.

Yeah, I agree it's definitely helpful to be organised. Saves last minute mad rushes!

Good tip about disability services. It's nice to have that support system in place & I'll have to remember to keep them in mind.

Thank you again and greatly appreciated 😊
