Hi Everyone 🙂
Thought I would write this thread in the orientation forum considering the topic is quite general and pertains to all of us. I've recently come out of a major depressive episode which lasted 2 months, and have an eating disorder. I'm just getting back on my feet and starting to learn more about myself and how I can recover moving forward in life. For the past week I've been going for long sunny walks every morning (not looking forward to winter !!) and listening to some really interesting and engaging podcasts from iTunes. My favourite is Mental Illness Happy Hour, and I've also listened to a few from ABC Radio's All in The Mind. Has anyone heard of them? Does anyone have any other recommendations?
Mental Illness Happy Hour explores a range of different mental illnesses and is always SO honest and refreshing in that sense. I think they've also helped because they've normalised, and made me feel less alone in this journey of mental illness. If anyone enjoys watching YouTube videos, I also think Kati Morton's videos are really helpful.
I hope for a good week for you all 🙂

Dear SummerCrossing~
Listening to podcasts is something I've found particularly helpful at times. I think partly it is a hands-free format so I can drive, mow, wash up or whatever.
My choice to a certain extent echoes yours, with All in the Mind, the Health Report, Life Matters and the more general Future Tense and the Science Show & Occam's Razor. I guess my emphasis is only partly on information relating to my illnesses, but also to gain a sense of perspective and just plain distraction.
I'll have a listen to the Mental Illness Happy Hour, it seems from it's archive to be pretty comprehensive. Thank you for mentioning it

Hi SummerCrossing,
Thanks for your post.
Ohh there are so many podcasts about mental health it can get a bit overwhelming!
The ones I would recommend are;
- The Good Life project. A lot of conversations about finding meaning, happiness, purpose and creativity. Even though it is quite broad there are a lot of conversations about mental health.
- The One You Feed. A lot of discussions about habits, meditation, wisdom and mood disorders. A lot of the people being interviewed do have a spiritual background but it's lovely to listen to.
- Invisibilia. Basically all the things you can't see. This does talk about other things as well but there is are a few great ones on mental health such as Fearless about a woman who can't experience fear and The secret history of thoughts which includes people with OCD and schizophrenia.'
- Let it be. Talks about a lot of self-help such as saying no, uncertainty, happiness,comfort zones and inner self talk. One of the hosts has struggled with PND but most of the podcasts are very light and don't cover mental illness as such.
- The Recovery Warrior Show. This one talks specifically about eating disorders and recovery; like journalling, recovery, social media, dating and shame.
