Interests?? Hobbies??

Hi All,

i find I get asked this question a lot, what interests/hobbies do I have?

I sometimes find myself making stuff up because I have none. Well not anymore.

I used to love dancing and did singing lessons for a while. I like to read , but I'm seriously lacking in this department.

My life is consumed with my kids/husband now and there isn't really a me.

Ive decided it's time to find something but the sad thing is I can't think of anything do.

Can you tell some of your interests etc to give me some ideas ??

Hi Molly and Paul,

I find myself in a similar situation to you Molly, with regard to hobbies. Up until the age of 17, I was active. I did a lot of rowing, cross country and athletics. Now I'm fond of reading, and I also enjoy giving advice to people on this forum. I don't play a musical instrument or have talent in the creative arts. For instance, I am tone deaf, terrible when it comes to dancing, and I cannot act to save myself. I almost find it amusing these days. I did enjoy art in primary and high school though, and I wasn't too bad at it.

I found writing satisfying when I did creative writing and self-writing as university electives. Writing is usually a personal strength, but is not something I dabble in of my own accord. Creating unique ideas for stories is not something that comes naturally. I admire those who are able to invent imaginary and fantastical worlds. J.K. Rowling is a creative powerhouse and legend. I only found out a few years ago that the "Dementors" stem from Mrs Rowling's experience with depression. Dementors are the black-hooded unearthly creatures that sap the happiness from people they encounter. Muggles (non-magic people) can feel their presence and are sometimes affected (like with depression). I found this so interesting!

Paul has great hobbies - perhaps you will take a leaf out of his book, so to speak.

Thanks for your post!

Best wishes,

SM

Hi Molly! I've been told that I'm an "old soul" as I enjoy the simple things like reading, writing and cooking hahaha! If you love reading, maybe check out some apps like "Wattpad" and maybe you could get into some writing? I know that at my local library they have a poetry group which I would love to join but it clashes with my study timetable so that's a bummer! Maybe there's some reading groups at your library or through the "Meetup" app that you could be a part of? Self-improvement activities are great too, but I'm not sure if they would fit into "interests or hobbies", groups like Toastmasters which I have recently become a member of are great ways to meet new people that could help widen your interests. Sometimes, it's not about going out of your way to find a new hobby or interest...you could maybe even set up a kind of "bucket-list" of new adventures. For example, get together with your family and write out different cuisines you haven't tried before and then make an effort to go to a different restaurant or make a meal that fits in with whatever is on the list, like "Italian, vegetarian, Japanese." That way, you get to spend time with your family (which you already do), whilst also doing something new.

Hi Molly,

Lovely to meet you.

You mentioned its time to find a hobby, that's great! If you liked dancing and singing once before could you possibly make it to different productions when they are on? There are lots of amateur groups that perform, could you join?

My hobbies that I've only just managed in past 4-5 years are jewellery making, listening to music.

All the best!

Hi Molly,

I feel the same way as you in that sometimes I make hobbies up. I have always distanced myself from activities due to my personal issues.
I suppose I have been forcing myself to acquire them though partially from embarrassment and partially to help myself overcome insecurities.

I regularly exercise. The exercise I do varies as I sometimes get anxiety and feel unwelcome at some places or am too scared to book into classes. Pilates, RPM, gym and even occasional dance classes.

I have a make up addiction, this may come from insecurities as well but has actually developed me in many ways. I did a beginners make up course last year and hoping to continue for personal interest.

My latest hobby is travel. I love learning of new cultures, putting myself in the culture and experiencing a different world to what I know. I havent travelled all that much just yet but am starting to branch out on different foods/tastes, reading history and will be planning a new adventure once I have enough money. Hopefully I will even have the courage to do this alone. I have signed up to learn French starting next month (fingers crossed I actually attend)
