I have no choice,I have to stop smoking!

Hi all,

This is going to be a huge thing for me and I need to get all the strength I can.

I am have an operation on Friday and they are all saying I have to STOP smoking.

This has been my life long friend for more than 30 years. I have had countless professional tell me that they would rather me have this vice over other medication.

I know it's a filthy habit, extremely bad for my health.

But oh how it has saved me over the years.

what I would like you to help me with is what you were able to take with meds,(I did try but it had major affects) a few years ago.

Any help would be appreciated as this is going to be a huge trigger for me.

Hi Nines

There is no easy way to quit. Took me many attempts, I tried all the gimmick methods: patches, gums, tablets, etc. Nothing seemed to work.

In my desire to find a sure fire method to quit, I studied my habit and the habit of friends. And I eventually found the secret to quitting, and I quit. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't fast. Took me two years to achieve it, but I did achieve it.

This method requires self commitment, and the willpower to abstain as long as you did yesterday. Then you can smoke as much as you want for the rest of the day. And it only has 2 rules.

  1. The first cig you have after you wake-up, must be at the same time or later in the day as your first one yesterday.
  2. Your day starts from the time you normally wake up, not midnight (as this is often part of the night before)

Applying the rules.

  • Say I wakeup most days at 7am.
  • We start our program on Monday
  • This means my first cig cannot be before 7:00am on Monday.
  • But I shower and dress before I go out to have a smoke, the time is 7:51am
  • Now I cannot have my first smoke on Tuesday until 7:51am.
  • At 7:45am Tuesday I am ready to smoke, but I have to wait until 7:51am
  • I can wait 6 minutes to have a smoke
  • But I waited 8 minutes, it's now 7:53am
  • So on the next day, the first smoke cannot be before 7:53am; which I do
  • Then again at 7:53, and again and again
  • And then I overslept. I didn't wake until 9am, then spent 26 minutes rushing to get ready. First smoke is at 9:26
  • Next day, I cannot have a smoke until 9:26am
  • and so on.

Eventually you are going to run out of daytime ... and my first smoke of the day was nearing dinner time. At that point, I was quite happy to go through the whole day without smoking, and just stopped. Sure the cravings persisted for awhile, but they too soon passed away into memories forgotten.

Good luck.

Hey 9names!

Always great to see you 🙂

I smoke and I dont want to like yourself.

Just my humble opinion....If a person is going through a really stressful time I think its counter productive to kick the habit until they have some basic level of peace in their lives so they have the strength to stop.

Hypnosis? Ive heard it works but Id rather go cold turkey if I had the guts

Good post 9names

my kindest

Paul

Just a quick one 9nl;

My psychiatrist once commented to me; (I'd rather have you smoking than hooked on medication, climbing the walls or worse) This btw is not medical advice!

We've got to be ready, end of story. When you've got the sh**s with it, it's time.

Cheers and exhale...ahh that's better

Sara (tongue in cheek) My 2 bob's worth

Hey Paul,Sara,and all.

as I sit out the back with me myself and I ,we hear you loud and clear.😩😤😷

my shrink said the same to me.

1yr ago I had all teeth removed in Vietnam (cost)

Friday I am have three of the five top arch implants removed due to them not intergrating with the bone.

I have major gum disease that also eats your bone. Major cause smoking.😱

Im bugged if I can do it.

Dear Later~

I could not do it for myself - ever.

I did do it, but that was for someone else I loved. Do you have someone else to do it for, someone that needs you to do it even if they say nothing?

Don't quit. Not yet anyway. Get some nicotine patches, and use them to get you through the operation and the healing. Then once you've recovered physically, you can decide if you want to quit. (Did you know you can get patches on a pbs script from your GP?)

Good luck.

Hey thanks,

you made me laugh 😂

l ph my shrink today and he said I can only have patches and gum.

For a minute I thought I wrote the post back to myself.
