Disclosing You Have Genital Herpes

CaptainCab

Hi all,

I have recently separated from my wife of 15 years and I have had genital herpes for most of my adult life, in fact I can't recall which partner likely gave it to me because I had it before marriage. The thing is, I never disclosed it to any partners previously (when I was young and dumb) but now that I am in my late 40's I am a responsible adult now so I want to be transparent to future partners.

Luckily I have no outbreaks due to daily medication so the chances of transmitting are low.

But, I wanted to know HOW do I bring this up to my next partner/s?

Thanks

Hi, welcome

Id suggest you bring the topic up when you think your relationship is close to intimacy. Be prepared with all documentation/ leaflets/ www printouts for your potential lover.

The alternative is asking her/him if they’ll accompany you to a GP so the matter can be explained

Hi CaptainCab,

Thank you for being brave and sharing! I think that it is so great that you are wanting to be responsible now and would like to disclose to future partners. I like white knight's idea of being prepared with documentation, leaflets and printouts. I also think how the other person reacts will show you a lot about them.

Again, I think it's really great that you are wanting to be responsible.

Please keep us updated how you go! Good luck!

Hi White Knight,

Yes I do like these ideas, especially the GP visit one.

Thank you!

Hi Missep,

Thank you for the kind words. I just want to be transparent and do the right things. She may have it also, never know! I am doing my best with medication to keep outbreaks from happening so I am taking care of myself for her.

Hi CaptainCab,

I think that's a really great mentality to have! It is a very human thing to go through and experience. It can be challenging but I really value when people are transparent and honest. I'm really glad to hear that the medication is helping as well!
