I find that when my bad thoughts come with depression I sing my favourite hymn that reminds me of my relationship with God. And it helps me to refocus my thoughts...
Be still my soul, thy Lord is on thy side
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
Leave to thy God to order & provide
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still my soul, thy best & heavenly friend
Through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end.

dear Missmuppet, I see that you posted 4 days ago so you are entitled to a reply.
I am not religious but please don't turn off from reading my reply.
You have every right to believe in God, as I will never dispute this unless someone wants to talk about it with me, or try and convince me to believe in any higher spirit, so this is your choice, so I accept this.
My wife (ex) had PND and never wanted any help, either medically or with any medication and she is a practising Catholic, but her depression lasted for a number of years, which I am sorry for her, but now she has a dispute with our eldest son, and her only wish is to see our 2 grand daughters aged 3 1/2 and 6 months, but her wish hasn't come true, and no matter how hard she prays for this to change, it won't until she gives some latitude to how she thinks, she is the mum so it's in her interest to give identify that what the problem is and rectify it, her belief won't do this it has to be done in real life. Hi
I would like to join Geoff in welcoming you here. And apologies for not posting a reply sooner.
It is a lovely hymn. It is good that you find that your belief gives you a support mechanism. We all use something to supplement that given by health practitioners and medicine.
Tell me please, are you also receiving professional support?
take care
K

I never meant to offend u Geoff, I understand your story in part through my own journey.
Even just knowing, the Lord is on thy side, helps me a lot. I do have professionals & medication too.
I was only trying to share a bit of what helps me. It's like the spirit part of me is different to my emotions. And that's where my faith kicks in.
Singing a "faith" song calls to that part of me & encourages my soul.

der Missmuppet, you don't have to worry about what you say to me, and please there is no apology needed, and I respect your feelings, so I should apologise to you, which I do.
I hope that you still post here, because I'm sure that there are others who also believe in God and their faith, as no one should be isolated because of what they believe in. L Geoff. x

This is my favourite part of religion, no matter which one you live by it helps its followers through dark times. Unfortunately I am not a religious person but I am glad to see it helps you deal with your depression 🙂
