Decluttering - KonMari style

Hey everyone,

So I think many of you have heard of Marie Kondo and her methods of decluttering, be it through Netflix, her books or just through social media articles.

I have read her book, and I love how it states that decluttering isn't just simply making the house neater and more presentable, but also helps bring about positive changes in our lifestyle and our mood by getting rid of what doesn't 'spark joy'.

I'd just like to hear your opinions and experiences regarding her method if you have tried it, and if you encountered any difficulties or noticed significant changes in how you feel. I do disagree with some of her advice (I still prefer hanging most of my clothes haha) but those are miscellaneous. Thanks and have a great weekend!

Julie,

What an interesting and very tpolical thread you have started.

I have looked the Mari Kondo book and know people aho have found it very helpful.

For me I have two problems with it.

The fact you only keep things that bring you joy, does that mean I can throw out my tax and cleaning equipment??!!

The second is she says to keep only 30 books . I run a bookshop and have a large personal collection. I would have 30 books on my coffee table!

I think you take what you want and I know people who have found it very helpful.

Cheers

Hi Julie3392 - and a wave to Quirky,

I'm pretty familiar with Marie Kondo and her Konmari method, and I've really enjoyed the idea of finding and keeping what sparks joy. I too hang a lot of my clothes! I agree that it's about pulling what you like out of the book and leaving the rest.

The difficulties I've found is finding things that don't spark joy but I feel compelled to hold onto, like those jeans I probably won't fit in again or that extra blanket that I don't need but I spent too much on to get rid of. Changes though - being able to get rid of things, and discover my style a bit. A lot of the things I own are hand-me-downs, which means that I've never really been given the opportunity to figure out what I really like - decor or fashion wise. I also like the idea of creating a space that sparks joy, so that the bedroom feels nice to walk into, rather than just being the same ole bedroom.

What about you, what have you found?

Quirky - you absolutely need to keep your tax and cleaning equipment! I think Marie has said that the cleaning equipment 'sparks joy' because it's nice to have a clean house, and the tax documents 'spark joy' because they are essential documents to keep (like your birth certificate). She was also interviewed about books and said that it was only a guideline, as many were booklovers! The suggestion there was just to go through them and see what sparks joy too.
