Hi all, I’ve been married for over 30yrs to a great lady. We have 3 adult children. I’ve always thought deep down that I have attractions to men. I’ve had several encounters and affairs throughout my marriage and have just told my wife everything, all cards on the table. I informed my kids that I think I am bi/gay and they have been very supportive about it, showing no judgment, just a bit of shock I guess. My wife is struggling to understand and accept this, and refusing to let me go or leave the marriage, occasionally saying that now that I’ve ruined her life she will ruin the rest of mine by denying me separation or divorce. She won’t allow me to tell any of our/her friends due to the embarrassment this will cause her.
I have massive guilt/anxiety/depression because of this and have constant thoughts of self harm/suicide. She says this is a cowardly thing to do to my family and dismisses me when I talk about it. Now we just constantly argue over the whole topic/situation, which just heightens my wanting to end it. I struggle with the thought of going on like this but don’t feel I can just walk away, scared of the thought of losing my kids. I’ve contacted Lifeline and Beyond Blue several times over the last few months, even ended up in the psych ward in hospital wanting to end it. I’ve had numerous appointments with psychiatrists and psychologists but this has not been helpful so far. Would be greatful for any advice moving forward, if that’s even possible?! Currently at rock bottom!!

Dear New Member~
Welcome here to the Forum, I'm glad you can as your current situation is terribly bad for you, nobody should be driven to the point of taking their life to try to stay in an unhappy relationship.
Please excuse me for being blunt, however it seems not only does your wife not accept you as you are, but wants to punish you and at the same time not release you.
While having affairs is a moot point you have been open and honest about them, it is often the lies and pretense that does the most harm
If you had young children maybe matters would be different, however that is not the case, your kids are adults and know you are bi/gay and have accepted you for the person you are.
When I was very suicidal it was my circumstances that drove me to that point, and leaving it made a world of difference. That constant re-enforcing pressure was no longer there. Psychiatrists did little good until I left, than it was a whole different matter.
You can see where I'm heading, your main fear if you separate is that you will not be able to see your children, however they are adults and and I would hope can make their own minds up.
If you were to decide to leave a marriage after 30 years it will no doubt be a pretty daunting matter and I'd suggest getting help, however as you have been together for so long and still say your wife is a great lady perhaps before doing anything else I'd suggest you see if you can try couples counceling.
I'd recommend Relationships Australia as being pretty effective, if they do not have a center near you then they may be able to suggest somewhere closer.
I'd also suggest, if you have not done so already getting in touch with QLIFE who would certainly have expereince of your situation
Do you have anyone in your life to give you the support you most certainly need? A family member or friend perhaps? Facing this all on your own is extra hard.
Remember you will always be welcome here.

Thanks Croix, I appreciate your words of wisdom and support at this time. Unfortunately I don’t have anyone to lean on or add support. I will take your advice though and contact QLife to start. Both my wife and I have been to councillors separately, with little success and this has turned her away from that option as they pretty much sided with my decision to ultimately wanting to leave. Again, thanks for your support. I will try to update my situation on this forum in the hope of helping someone else in a similar situation as me. X
