Racism on the media

Hey all, I thought to express some thought here. I am of immigrant background Indian to be specific. I think the mental stress is just unbearable at this stage. Any tips how to get by and keep going when you are constantly abused for just trying to be a "human" and get through life

Dear Vik888,

Thank you for reaching out here and I'm sorry you are going through the mental stress. Any kind of racism, in the media or anywhere, can be really impactful and harmful. It is really hard when, as you say, you are just trying to get through life as a human being.

Do you have some people in your life you can talk to you about your feelings who you know will be supportive and understanding? I have found connecting with like-minded people can often help when we are mistreated by other people who are not so kind. Often the kind people can act as a sort of buffer against things like racism, because it reminds us that there are people with good hearts and open minds.

I'm experiencing discrimination in my small town, because I spoke up for a particular group that someone was being racist against. This has led me to be bullied for over a year and I am working out how to get out of this town and move somewhere that is more inclusive and open-minded, where there is at least more chance to meet people who I feel safe and happier to be around.

The Reach Out website which is for young people with mental health issues does have an info page on their website entitled "What to do if you're experiencing racism". I'm not sure what age you are, but the information there may be helpful in any case, so it might be helpful to have a look.

I know it can be so hard to do, but remembering that the problem is with the other people and not you, is really important. You are of value and we are happy to support you here.

Best wishes,

Eagle Ray
