Fairness at work

Where do we(non-white people) seek help to find fairness at work especially when the management already decided which side they're on?

Hi, welcome

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this in 2025 when by now there should be no racism, but realistically there is and we have to consider several options to find the most ideal of all poor options out there. Here are some options-

  • In such situations that are really intolerable you might be better off accepting that some companies have racism or discrimination present and at 1st opportunity move on always hoping you'll get a better management that wont only treat you fairly but will punish anyone stepping over the line at your working level.
  • Wait until a really good clear example appears of racism hopefully in writing like a memo that can be presented to higher management that proves it is taking place.
  • Fight back with wit and fewer words, done with questions. This can be very effective if done right. eg a supervisor invites all white people to a lunch function but not you. "did you fail to invite me to lunch due to my work performance or the colour of my skin"? Such a question makes them make a choice between the two options you gave them. Using wit is best learned by reading the 1st post of this link below- https://forums.beyondblue.org.au/t5/staying-well/wit-the-only-answer-for-torment/td-p/71440

Please try to accept that there is many white people that adore our indigenous or migrant peoples. I'm 5th generation maybe 6th. Before then my family history is blurred except I am a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce, a leader in the 11th century. But I havent got the valuable blood for tens of thousands of years in this country. You have that, its priceless.

SHIFTING EYES

In a land of the greatest flora and fauna

there's still nasties in every corner

We cannot eradicate those shifting eyes and snarly mouth

No matter how much we fume or how long we shout

But there is one thing we can master now with no sigh

And thats how tall we hold our head up high

Respect and consideration are not listed on shelves

But its achievable, a gift to ourselves...

I hope I've helped.

Hi Ann_ACD,

We are so sorry to hear that you are experiencing this. Whether it is once-off or ongoing, racism is never okay and not something that any employee should be expected to deal with. You have a right to be safe and free from discrimination based on your race wherever you are – including work.

Safe Work Australia has some great information about laws regarding racism at work, as well as practical advice on what to do if you witness or experience racism at work: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/safety-topic/hazards/racism

Another helpful resource is the Australian Human Rights Commission, particularly this section on Race Discrimination: https://humanrights.gov.au/our-work/race-discrimination

Experiencing racism can be deeply distressing and take a huge emotional toll. Is there anyone you have been able to talk to about this?  If you would ever like to reach out to the Beyond Blue Support Service, please do not hesitate to contact us on 1300 22 4636, or you can use our webchat here: https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/.  We will also add a link to a range of multicultural support options, too: https://itstopswithme.humanrights.gov.au/take-action/support-services

Once again, thank you for sharing. We’re glad that you have been able to reach out here and we hope that the Forums can be a safe and supportive space for you. Take good care of yourself, Ann_ACD.

Kind regards
