Struggling with Motivation to do Assignments

JohnSmith42
Community Member
Hello everyone. I'm new here and reaching out for the first time. I've got a lot of stuff going on at home which I won't go into right now and I've been dealing with depression for a while now. I'm in year 11 and the workload is starting to overwhelm me. I've never had problems with getting work done before but now I just can't seem to get motivated to do anything. I have two assignments each due over a week ago but I still can't focus. Also feeling a lot of self hate to do with this procrastination. Just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone has some advice on how to stay motivated.

Hey Johnsmith42,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for sharing your story with us. I think the fact that you are reaching out for the first time is amazing and I commend you.

So sorry to hear that you have been dealing with depression for a while. I can absolutely relate to having depression and having to complete university assignment, turn up to class and the like.

Motivation is a tricky one because it depends on a few things. Here are a few things that you might want to ask yourself

1 - Do you enjoy being at school?

2 - Has anything changed recently in your life that is making you less motivated?

3 - Do you feel that the topics that you are studying are interesting?

4 - Do you see school as a necessary component of where you want to be later in life? For example do you see yourself engaging in tertiary education where you need to do well at school etc?

I think you are also being a little too hard on yourself. Most people lack motivation at some point in their lives and it is completely normal. Most of my peers at university lack motivation so its completely common!

Also, do you see a health professional for the depression? If so, maybe speak to them about your lack of motivation and options available. Maybe medication may be a thing to talk to them about which may help your depression and motivation because when we are feeling better we are generally more motivated.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hope this helped.

Hello,

I feel things sound very intense and stressful at home for you. Plus on top of that, you have school pressures as well, which must be very overwhelming.

It must be so frustrating to know you have the ability to complete your school work yet motivation is a struggle at the moment. I feel for you, and baet clearly can too...I’m glad baet kindly reached out to you.

Just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone has some advice on how to stay motivated.

I’m happy to offer some gentle suggestions for you to consider (only if you feel they might work for you...no pressure).

I was thinking for your overdue assignments, maybe you could consider giving yourself your own “deadline.” E.g. telling yourself you will get it done by tomorrow night (your self imposed “deadline”) and create a rough schedule between now and tomorrow night for what you need to do by breaking the assignment down into smaller, more manageable tasks. Perhaps if you perceive it as a series of smaller tasks, maybe it would feel less daunting...

Also, I’m thinking you might like to visit Headspace online. It’s an organisation that is dedicated to helping young people with mental health issues. They have a wealth of free information and resources for plus I’ve heard another forum user here say they’ve a section for study related issues and advice, which you might find helpful.

There’s no rush or pressure but if you’re feeling up to it, it would be nice to hear how things have been going since your first post.

Caring and compassionate thoughts,

Pepper

Thanks so much to both you Pepper and Baet123 for getting back so quickly. Yes, I do (most of the time) enjoy school and I want to get the work done, I'm just having trouble doing so. I really appreciate the the advice from both of you, and I'll go take a look at Headspace now. Really feeling what a great community this seems to be already.

Hey Johnsmith42,

It is a great sign that most of the time you enjoy school and want to get done but yes it is normal to lack motivation so don't stress my friend. Headspace is great. Super caring environment and they will approach your situation holistically. This community is great and it is awesome that your here now too!

Please keep us posted.
