Something feels wrong..

I've been on medication for quite a number of years and I recently fulfilled a new script but the chemist gave me a different brand and since then I've been feeling jittery in my body, have waves of feeling like I just can't be bothered, have trouble sleeping and I just don't feel like myself. I haven't changed anything else except added a fish oil tablet to my diet. Should I speak with my chemist or my doctor? The medication looks the same!

Hi JC and welcome to Beyondblue forums.

Its sounds like your chemist has provided a generic brand of the medication you've been on for some years. They will often ask whether you prefer to stick to the brand name or are happy to get a generic brand when you drop your script off for filling. The active ingredients in the generic brand is the same as the brand name medication, but it often comes under a different name. But the label on your medications will likely say something like "same as .......".

Given that the active ingredients in the medication is the same as what you've always been on, its highly unlikely that the generic brand is the cause of your recent symptoms. I dont know whether fish oil has any affect of reducing the absorption of your other meds? You could perhaps ask your chemist about that.

But as far as the ADs go, I would suggest you speak to your GP about that. Sometimes when we are on ADs for quite some time, they may not be as effective as they once were. Your GP may suggest a review by a psychiatrist, or they may prescribe an alternative AD or perhaps try an increase in the existing.

I hope it all works out well for you.

Amanda

Thanks Amanda, I will ask the chemist about the fish oil. I started taking it the same time I started my new script and this is when these symptoms started so I do feel like it was one or the other and as you say the generic brand is the same (I always use generic!)

Hi JC

I was just reading up the other day about generics vs original brands and there was a bit of anecdotal evidence of people reacting strangely to generics.

If you think that might be the cause, you could always just go back to the pharmacy and ask them to swap them for the original brand.

Good luck!

That's interesting! I definitely feel like it's something going on with either the new brand or the fish oil interacting. I will definitely go back and ask about swapping back over to the other generic brand I've been on.
