Self harm and Depression

Ok So I cant mention self harm but would like to say it does go hand in hand with certain forms of depression. This can mean putting yourself in dangerous situations, physically hurting yourself, abusing drugs, becoming reclusive, associating with the 'Wrong type' of people.

I have done them all but would like to hear from anyone who has had success in suppressing these urges. Strategies, own stories, Anything even a good recipe for scones. The only tricks I have learned so far are laughing at 'It' or compartmentalising it....

Hi there RossMonkey (and unusual name and is a good one)  🙂

Welcome to Beyond Blue and thanx heaps for setting up this post.

Strategies and activities to put forward to keep the thoughts and actualisations (is there such a word as that) of providing/doing self harm to oneself.

I'm sure there would be a thread on here somewhere about that;  it might be worth putting into the Search mechanism something like "strategies against self harm" perhaps?

But if you've got a family or good relationship (um, have you? - though, should say here, sorry for being so nosey);  but these are the key/crucial things I use for myself.  I have two children (16yo and 14yo) and they are the main reason I'm still here today.

As a result of them, they are also a key component to why my thoughts of self harm have lowered dramatically.

Hells bells, we even have two dogs and to see the looks on their eyes when you come home, wow, to me that means so much.  I mean, how could I let them down?

Ok, this post seems to have been all about me me me,  I would love to hear back from you and a little bit more about your story;  as in, are you a working fella, do you have special interests/sports etc?  See these things can also be a helping factor too.

Kind regards

Neil

ps:  no idea on how to make scones - sorry.

Hi Rossmonkey,

Great to hear from you and welcome to Beyond Blue. I'm wondering what people called "Self Harm" before it received that title?

Some time ago I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, and a big part of that condition in a lot of people is  self harming. Like you mentioned it can happen in all kinds of forms.

For me, I don't always control my urges, but do try to acknowledge that my actions are not rational or what a so called normal person would do.

To cope with those urges I try to occupy myself with something else like gardening, reading, exercising, cleaning, going for a drive, and trying to take my mind off what ever caused me to think about doing inappropriate stuff in the first place.

Maybe for you, making those scones could be a great idea, keep your mind occupied and try something different.

If you want a really easy way to make scones, then go to the supermarket and you can buy a scone mix, just like a cake mix! You still have to mix it and cook it yourself!

But then if you really want the scones but don't want the fuss of making them, ask Granny to bake you some if you have a Granny, or some bakeries sell them. For me I love them with apricot jam and whipped cream, and a strong cup of tea.

They are best eaten with friends, and also out in a garden somewhere.

(I'm not wanting to make light of your problems, but I do find if I try to add a little humour to my concerns they don't seem as bad!)

Cheers, from Mrs. Dools
