Reducing my medication Dosage

Wanderingguy
Community Member

Hi everyone.  I have been on my current antidepressant for around 12yrs now.  I now feel that my mood is no longer stale and my anxiety, agitation etc has increased significantly.  yes there have been a few challenges in my life recently which I am sure have contributed.

Anyway to make a long story short 2 weeks ago I halfed my dosage with a view to weaning off completely however, I now find that after reducing my dosage my moods, anxiety etc have stabalised and i am feel better than i have for quite a while now.

What I would like to know, is "is this a normal result for reducing your dosage?"  If not, im confused as to why i am feel so good.  by the way, im not complaining about that, im just a little confused.

Cheers in advance.

Dear Wanderingguy~

It's been a year or more since you were last here so welcome back. I'm not sure anyone can answer your question, as everyone is different. I've felt better with less of some medications and worse without others, all in all I trialed a fair few before settling on a combination that worked for me, and even that has to be 'tweaked' occasionally.

I don't think either that one can predict if your new feeling good will last. All I can say is that if your old medication was becoming ineffective I'd suggest it is time to have a talk with your doctor and see what  suggestions are made. I've done this many times after giving a new regimen time to take hold, and there was always something else to try or adjust.

Going off a medication without supervision can be dangerous at times as the results are unpredictable. If your good feeling left suddenly you might be back at the stage of self-harm again. On one occasion tailing off one drug brought back my suicidal feelings very strongly, fortunately  I was doing this in conjunction with my psychiatrist and it got sorted out quickly.

In my own case my circumstances had a pretty big effect on how I felt, and from your account of what has been happening to you I'd not be surprised if your medication might have needed altering to cope wiht the  extra problems. anyway. Did you get a chance ot discuss this with you doctor?

I hope your good state remains and that your employment hassles have been sorted, please let us know
