Over my mental health being so labeled

Joe1
Community Member

Dose anyone else just wish their mental illnesses just disappear or be fixed tomorrow?

Today all anyone has spoken about all day is the fact that I have a mental health illnesses. From my boss to my girlfriends mother! I'm over it! I just want the fact that I have a mental illness to be forgotten. 😞 I'm over everybody saying stuff about my mental illness and I'm crazy ect.

Anyone else feel like this at times??

Need help dealing with it all, its really getting to me.

hi Joe, absolutely, the many years of suffering from MI, that is the illness they could see, was exhausting listening to people saying to me 'how is your depression going' or 'how are you feeling today' obviously aimed at myself, but I didn't want to be asked nor reminded, I knew how I was feeling, please leave me alone and doesn't this keep me locked into depression.

Perhaps it instantly labels you with a strange behaviour or some belief which maybe demeaning or hurtful to you, because to insinuates that we have a mental illness may cross the line, maybe I'm just having a bad day, but remember when you are struggling to find an answer doesn't mean that you aren't mentally ill.

If we are labelled with depression some comments may leave you questioning where you actually stand in society, and if you are border line, that is just having a bad day compared to falling into depression it may tip you over into depression. Geoff.

Joe 1,

welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It is awkward when people only see a label or an illness and not the whole person. I suppose people feel they are being helpful.

I have lived with a label for over 40 years and so have seen a change in people's reactions from avoiding me, to being unsure of what to say to now many people feel they are an instant expert as they have read an article on the internet. There is much more awareness now but as you say being constantly reminded of one's illness is not helpful.

I think labels can be useful so we can be treated but that's also can be restrictive as that is all people see.

Even after all these years it is hard explaining that I have having a bad day not ill.
Of course if we need help it is good to know people will be supportive.

To my loved ones I have said, I appreciate your concern ,I am doing fine and I will let you know if I need help.

It i a very interesting topic and Geoff has made some thoughtful points.
