How do I get through my last year of school? Ready to give up on everything and everyone

Before the virus all started, I was just getting better from dealing severe depression. And now I'm experiencing it all over again. My last year of school has been ruined, I have lost my job, my sporting season has been cancelled and I'm forced to stay at home. I've tried opening up to my family to talk about how I feel and I just get shut down every time. I try extremely hard to find things to do to keep me happy, but nothing works. I have no one to talk to and I feel so alone in my household. Can someone please give me advice or ideas on how to get through this.

Hi James2611

I am new here too but I want you to know that you are not alone and that I appreciate where you are coming from. I have both a son and a daughter, one in early twenties, one in mid-late teens. Both have struggled with the very same sort of issues. So first of all - please do not blame yourself. The world is going through major upheavals and all of us, but especially young people, are going through experiences unprecedented in recent times. Finding it hard to be happy with all the stressors that life if throwing at you makes complete sense!

What I have told my young adult children is to try and focus on being a bit more 'present'. Anyone would get overwhelmed by losing employment, sport, and being forced to stay at home. Perhaps instead try and be mindful of the smaller things - go fo a walk, feel the sunshine, really look at your surroundings, try and find small things to savour. Most if not all of the bigger things are outside your control right now. So perhaps try focusing and find some meaning, even if small, on little things day by day. Sometimes, a lot of little things can add up to bigger changes.

This isn't to dismiss or belittle your very valid major concerns. You can address them in time - when the world situation improves and opportunities will present themselves. For now, focus on small things, find enjoyment where you can, and most of all forgive yourself for not being happy right now.

Hi James2611,

Thanks for sharing your story and reaching out to the forum. It is frustrating losing one's job, sports season and the study is being affected. On top, when there is no one to listen or support you. First of all James, please don't feel that it is your fault! It is no one's fault! The time in the world now is such that no one has ever experienced especially the young!

Maybe this is the only time where you can focus on small things - like exploring your own self. Because eventually, everything will pass.
