I’ve been struggling with depression for the last 3-4 years. I feel like no matter who I talk to, they won’t understand how to feel or how to help me. I feel so isolated from my family and friends, and it’s so hard to just communicate with them. I’m having such a hard time just taking care of myself and I don’t know what to do. Everything feels so difficult and daunting that I just end up laying in bed doing nothing. I’ve tried doing the basics like eating healthy and exercising. But I don’t have any motivation to continue those habits. I feel like my medication isn’t making a difference and I want to go to a therapist but it’s so hard to find free time in my schedule. I’m so scared of failing at uni as i’m not keeping up with my studies or assignments. I worked really hard to get to where I am but I don’t feel satisfied with my life. I just constantly question if I’ll ever my satisfied and content with my life or will I always be wanting more and more. I’d just like some advice on how to go from here, if anyone’s been in a similar position and what worked from them.

Hello,
Welcome and thank you for reaching out to us.
I have been dealing with depression since about age 12 (now in my 60s). The main reason I have not been able to get on top of it, is because mental health was not recognised or talked about back then and by the time I was diagnosed in my 40s, it had become ingrained for want of a better term.
While you are still young is the best time to get on top of depression so I would like to offer some suggestions.
Firstly, since your medication is not helping, you need to go back to your GP and tell them. Sometimes we go through some changes which means that the medication that was once helping is no longer the right one for us. I had to try 3 and the third one was the right one for me.
Clearly, you are not coping and it's really important to realise that your mental health must come first.
Are you able to postpone Uni for 12 months? Or perhaps arrange to spread the remainder of your tuition over a longer period?
As far as therapy goes, this is something you need right now, so can you access help through Uni? They should have a psychologist or similar that you can talk to. You could also talk to your GP about setting up a mental health plan. There are therapists that do consultations via Zoom (or similar), which may be easier for you to fit into your schedule. Whatever way you decide, please don't ignore your mental health, life can be so much better than you are currently experiencing, but only you can take the steps to make that change.
I will be here if you have questions or want to talk more.
Take good care of yourself,
