Does heat cause mental illness?

ScarlettR

As it's well known, Australia has intense heatwaves. In recent years, the summers had gotten hotter (global warming?) and the Bureau of Meteorology said that heatwaves could cause mental illness.

I agree with this. Any thoughts?

Hi Scarlett,

I don't think the idea is out there. The human mind is a strange thing.

My friend used to say on night shift that people had the "full moon lemon lips" on. And over the years I believe it. You can only work so many nights and see the chaos on a full moon to realise environment can have an effect.

Plus there is the simple fact that people generally feel uncomfortable and disgusting when it is so hot. Lack of sleep. Heatstroke. Dehydration. Maybe not causing mental illness but triggerring for sure.

Yes, I think so. Hibernating, to avoid going out in the heat, is isolating; and that surely isn't good for metal health, especially as no one will see how well one is coping, or not.
