I'm starting a new job in a few weeks and I have to fill in a Pre-Employment Health Assessment form. On it it has a health questionnaire that outright asks if I currently have or have ever had depression or any other mental illness. Do I have to answer truthfully, and, if not, is it better if I do not disclose my depression at all.

hi Jarf, this is always a big decision you have to make, because if you say that you have had any mental problems the chances are that you won't be given the job, because what it could mean is that you will need days off more than you are entitled to.
If you are still struggling with depression and they employ you, even though you have said no in the questionarrie, then they will find out, whereas if you feel you are feeling pretty well and confident and have overcome your depression, then I wouldn't tell them that you have had any depression.
Remember that anybody who has never had this illness may suddenly become depressed, but there are times when a white lie doesn't hurt, because sometimes this illness is still frowned upon in employment.
Others may disagree and they're entitled to their own opinion. Geoff.

Hi Jarf
Geoff is spot on here.
Unfortunately your chances of getting the position would be greatly reduced by being truthful on this form.
The question is there to protect the employer, not to benefit/care for you.
It wouldnt be lying to say no....you would only be ensuring employment and your future security financially
Businesses in Australia still have a lot to learn on this illness. I would never say yes to that question if asked
kind regards
Paul

Hi Jarf, we have a tool on our Heads Up website to help you weigh up the pros and cons in making a decision about disclosing a mental health condition at work - every situation is different:
