Hi I am Shyer000 and I’m concerned that I may have depression but I’m not sure? I am only young but old enough to understand this as I am a teenager. I have taken online tests and they all resulted in high but I don’t want to see a doctor and I’m not sure how to tell my Mum that I think this is happening. A couple weeks ago I felt really alone in this world and I shouted at my brother and sister (who were laughing at me) whatever you think it’s funny that I want to kill myself! My sister told my mum the other night and she was upset because I close friend of hers had just attempted to commit suicide which didn’t help the fact that I felt so alone and unwanted. I’m not sure I want to ring anyone yet but I’m up for texting.
Can anyone give me any advice on what to do?

Hi Shyer000
Even though I'm a 49yo mum to 2 grown teenagers, I can still remember the pain that comes with not knowing how to deal with life, in my days as a teenager. Was pretty lost, which led me to deal with the many years of depression which lay ahead. The reason I mention this is because I don't want you to have to face long term depression. For you, this will involve a challenge that might go against your current nature but it's one that can change your life for the better, now.
The challenge I give you involves seeking guidance and support. Whether you access the resources Sophie so thoughtfully gave to you or whether you sit and have an openhearted discussion with your mum, it's important to seek support. You've already risen to the challenge of coming here. You've met this challenge you set yourself Shyer; you've stepped up in your own life and this is a powerful move. This move means you're raising yourself in a new way in your quest to meet with greater mental well being.
Was just saying to someone yesterday 'Life is skillful, yet we're rarely given many of the skills needed to live a fulfilling life'. Coming out of my depression some time ago, I have risen to many of the challenges which are now giving me skills in living this kind of life. Remember, these are the skills which are typically not taught to us:
- How to naturally raise our self esteem when the need presents
- How to read our own energy and assess what our mind and body need. Eg. Certain foods as well as hydration can boost the energy of our internal systems (circulatory, lymphatic and so on). There are other energy sources too. Certain strategic challenges we set our self can raise our thoughts from 'I can't do anything right' to 'I can achieve just about anything I set my mind to'. Of course, thoughts create chemistry (good and not so good). Sounds strange but we can learn to manipulate our self
- How to access intuition effectively. This one requires not letting to much thinking get in the way of a good bit of inspiration. Thinking our way out of things that are beneficial can become a habit. Knowing when to ground our self through thinking/reason and when to seek inspiration is an art that requires awareness and balance
The list goes on.
Our parents only teach us the skills they know. The rest we have to seek. Give further thought to seeking the skills and guidance you need. Hard to believe but you may even discover your calling in life involves teaching skills to others.
🙂

Good Morning Shyer, and we all sympathise for what you are going through because we know how this actually feels and it's never pleasant at all and certainly a worry.
Can I suggest you write down on some paper what and how you are feeling and present this to your doctor or perhaps you could contact Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, or by webchat, other places as well as BB that could help you are ReachOut, HeadSpace and Sane who maybe able to help you.
We'd like to know how you get on.
Geoff.
