Any tips for someone suffering from depression and cannot sleep?

Hi there everyone

This is my first post on the Beyondblue community forum. So I am a 21 year old male and I have had depression for almost 2 years now and as a result I cannot sleep. I have never had trouble with sleeping throughout my life. It has only started since I was diagnosed with depression. When I go to bed at night I just simply cannot sleep at all. I will lie there for hours in my bed trying to fall asleep but I just cant. The thoughts in my head caused from the depression seem to keep me awake all the time and I've tried lots of different things and it still doesn't work. I am just curious if anyone else has experienced this and if anyone knows any good advice on the matter. The problem is that because I have a lack of sleep. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to treat my depression and to exercise because I am perpetually exhausted from not getting enough sleep.

Hi Evanti

Welcome to the forums and good on you for having the courage to post as well!

I understand where you are with depression and sleep can be very difficult to find when we have a 'tired' mind. It took me a few years with awful sleep quality before I started to see my doc on a super regular basis to treat the problem I had...which was similar to yours

Sure...exercise and meditation all work very well but sometimes we need a good GP that be a source of strength and advice for us too.

Can I ask if you have been diagnosed with depression ?

You are proactive with your health by posting on the forums 🙂

There are many gentle people on the forums that can be here for you Evanti. I hope you can stick around. You are more than welcome to!

My kind thoughts for you Evanti

Hi

Welcome to the BB family. For me i keep my tv on in the bedroom on something i like but not a movie that i would force myself to stay awake for. It helps me to not think. When i dont overthink then i find i relax alot easier.

Hi Evanti,

I would recommend "Yoga Nidra"

Put that into google in your phone and try one with your headphones in.

Research shows that 1/2 hour of this (guided meditation ) is the equivalent of four hours of sleep.

I've had a horrible week am DC can't sleep, but I've used a yoga nidra each night and it has helped me.
