Hi Sara (hey startingnew),
Firstly, I'm so sorry, startingnew, never mind me and this post.
Everyone else, please feel free to ignore this post as this is not directly relevant to the thread. Classic Dottie digresses moment 😒
Sara, thanks for the thoughtful response. I wasn't quite expecting you to follow it up. I appreciate how you put a lot of thought in it.
I think you have raised some good points. I agree with you that, sure, of course a person has to believe in his or her own abilities and sense of agency in order to be able to act on any available choices.
But I also think it's not a case of either or. Like, a person can have all the self confidence in the world but she or he also needs supporting institutional, cultural and governmental structures on his/her side in order to act on any potential choice.
Like, you can think you would make a great engineer but you can only realise that dream if unis will let you study engineering and if organisations will hire you when you graduate.
So I think the 2, that is, self esteem and wider societal influences and structures both play a role when it comes to choice. I think we need both is my perspective.
Anyway, perhaps I shouldn't have asked (why so curious haha). Thanks for answering especially when you found it a difficult question. Either way, here's to you continue to build your self esteem. Onwards and upwards huh?
Keep doin' your amaze thing. I'm sure heaps of people look to you for inspiration and hope.

P.S. Welcome!

(Shout out to everyone reading or posting too!)
Hey Paul! You're absolutely spot (diddley) on! Behind the satire and yellow characters, are wonderful sentiments about 'life'. A go-to place for tongue in cheek inferences that poke at social standards. The laughs are a plus too...
My dear Dottie; today, I'm inspired by you young lady...very worthy indeed. Sigh...your points are well rounded and relevant for one so young. Yeah...I know, I say it a lot. But the reality of your intellect and wisdom combined, makes for unbelievable reading.
I can't get enough of your brilliance my lovely! What you wrote above, is some of the best you've done. You've used your own knowledge and what I wrote (thankyou btw) to formulate an opinion that's relevant for this day and age. (You make me smile)
Well done...keep up the great work!!

Hi Sara (shoutout to thread owner, startingnew),
Sara...Wow, thank you. That was unexpected. I don't know what to say but thank you 😊 I just like to talk and talk and talk (obviously haha).
Startingnew, thanks for this thread and tolerating my tendency to ask questions and go a tad off topic.
Anyway, just to highlight Startingnew's original question, which was something like:
Who inspires you and why?

Apart from being inspired by many of the people in BB, my vote goes to a gent by the name of Michael Milton (It's worth looking up his story).
Michael was Australia's first winter Olympics gold medallist (not Steven Bradbury as everyone thinks). He is also an amputee. That's not why I nominated him however.
I met Michael's mum many years ago after a family tragedy. I didn't know her story at the time either, but she exuded so much positive energy, I gravitated to her warmth. She would often speak about how proud she was of her son and his achievements. I later saw him interviewed during the City to Surf...running it on crutches.
She would regularly update me on his latest exploits, as he shared similar interests to my own. A few years later I was training for a charity cycling event, and got a call from him out of the blue. He was apparently the ambassador of that year's event, and would I like to go on a training ride with him? Full of trepidation, I arranged to meet him, and was overcome by his generosity of spirit, and sheer determination. Thanks to Michael, I completed the event a few months later, never understanding the talent of the man who had given of himself so freely to me.
Last month was the 25th anniversary of that gold medal, and there was a bit of publicity around the man Michael is. My jaw dropped. I had no idea of the things this unassuming man had achieved, this man that gave so selflessly of his time and energy. He is a public speaker (if you ever need one I can thoroughly recommend him!), a campaigner, and an all-round good guy. I feel privileged not only to have met him, but also to have bathed in his warmth.
He is currently training for an endurance event, and I am in awe of his dedication and determination. Read his story - it's worth it!
