Hi All,

I hope everyone is staying safe and well during this hectic time. Since it looks like a fair number of us are due for some extended time inside, I thought I might poke around Netflix and see what was available that I might recommend. I think this would be a great place to talk about films, especially our favorites to watch when home sick or our go-to rewatchables. The ones below are all available on Australian Netflix as of the time of posting. I did my best to avoid anything too heavy/serious/related to sickness!

Action & Adventure:

Princess Mononoke (1997): Gorgeously animated environmentalist fairytale with great English-language voice acting
John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum (2019): incredibly stylish, hyper-violent third entry in the hitman series starring Keanu Reeves
The Matrix (1999): mind-bending story about a society run as a computer simulation
Jurassic Park (1993): Feel-good but thrilling classic about a theme park where dinosaurs are brought back to life
Baby Driver (2017): heist movie about a getaway driver with a great soundtrack

Kids & Family

Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade (1989): Excellent adventure about the search for the Holy Grail with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery
The Iron Giant (1999): Touching animated movie about a boy’s relationship with a robot
Shrek/Shrek 2 (2001/2004): Funny animated send-up of fairytales enjoyable for adults as well
Matilda (1996): Danny DeVito’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl story of a precocious girl and the unimpressive adults in her life
Hairspray (2007): campy adaptation of the John Waters original about an aspiring singer in 1960s Baltimore

Hey Small Wolf,

Which Coen Brothers films do you like? Do you have a favourite?

I'm watching Black Books now, anyone seen it?

Gems, I'd love to get my hands on the latest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, I've seen some (probably up to season 5 or so)... but nowhere near all. Very funny show!

I finished Fleabag and yes, uber depressing. Extremely. In a way I can't quite explain but just left me feeling uncertain about life in general, whch is not quite what you want in these times!!! Maybe time for a reliable and light show to binge on...

I haven't seen the newest season yet either! I know it's on American HBO, which I don't think you guys have here. Stan perhaps?

I think it's only on Foxtel 😞

It looks really good, has cameos from Isla Fisher, Abbi Jacobson and Mila Kunis.

Bumping the thread with another update of recent watches:

Jerry Maguire, Hail, Caesar!, Escape from New York, Extraction, Gladiator, Thoroughbreds, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Chinatown, House of Games, Free Fire, the Punk Singer, GoldenEye, Porco Rosso, The Day of the Jackal

Definite recommends:

Porco Rosso– incredibly beautiful, funny, and charming Miyazaki movie about a pig who flies a plane

The Day of the Jackal– thriller about the plot to assassinate Charles de Gaulle

Chinatown– classic neo-noir starring Jack Nicholson about water theft during a drought in Los Angeles

Escape from New York– great John Carpenter action movie about a near future where all of Manhattan is turned into a massive prison

I've been watching clips of the new Curb season on youtube and absolutely laughing loving it.

Hi Gems,

Yay - love your recommendations. Always nice to have some more.

I haven't watched all of Curb seasons so I'm catching up before I watch 10, just finished 6 yesterday and it was such a treat!!! It's a great show. Will source out Chinatown that you recommended!!

Been watching the British Show Catastrophe (season 3 on ABC Iview), finished Fleabag Season 2, and watching an American show called Better Things about a single Mum who is also an actor, working in LA.

I also watched Jerry Seinfeld's newest comedy special on Netflix. Keen to hear what everyone's watching!

Hi Guys,

I have some great suggestions for some ALL OUT GIRL POWER films:

- Terminator 2: Judgement Day

- Thelma & Louise

- Starman

Thelma and Louise is brilliant! thanks doz86.

On Netflix atm

Gloria Bell is a great feminist flick, if anyone's seen it. Interestingly, the same director made a version of the film in Spanish - it's almost word for word the same, with a few little tweaks in the American version.

if we're talking about women-centric films theres also hidden figures, its on netflix - a biodrama about three black ladies who were nasa mathematicians during the space race while having to deal with gender/race segregation.

I remember when Hidden Figures came out - it was amazing.
I am now watching Dead to Me on Netflix, and can't imagine ten years ago there would be a (top ten, hugely popular) show which was basically about two women in their 40s and their friendship. I love how women can now be the main character and not just the love interest, mum, or villain.

YESSSSSSS T2!!!!
