Hey! Welcome to Friends Cafe.

This is a chill and chat space for young BB members to talk about anything and everything and make new friends.

When school's getting to you, uni or work has got you down, parents, partners, friends don't understand, and especially if you're feeling alone or lonely - come and relax awhile and talk to others who know just how you feel.

Our minds can cause us trouble, but they can also be amazing things that imagine beauty, love and fun. This cafe has everything you can imagine. To start with it's, well, a cafe. So there's chairs and tables, comfy couches for flopping, a big screen tele, unlimited download on computers for games, Spotify (or an old-school jukebox if you prefer), every movie you can think of on instant demand ... whatever you want, it's here. Post and tell us what'd you'd like.

Plus, there's an infinite menu of whatever food or drinks takes your fancy. And it's all free!

To kick it off, today we have a special range of Monster Milkshakes - those thick gooey shakes topped with cronuts, chocolate bars, cake, cookies ... whatever you want. And if you can get through one of them, you're a legend (and probably feeling a little bit sick LOL!)

Welcome friends.

Hey Dottie,

Thank you! And wow that sounds hard and like a lot of work, but really interesting!

Hey Dottie, dark unicorn, lost girl and other forum-goers,

That's great that you're studying psych Dottie! Commerce sounds challenging. My younger sister is doing a double degree in Law/Commerce.

Good on you for aspiring to be a paramedic dark unicorn! I completely agree with Dottie about how it takes a certain type of dedicated person to be a paramedic or a nurse.

Like you Dottie, I wouldn't be suited to medical work. I am alright with blood, but I have a phobia of vomit. So, I therefore couldn't be a doctor, paramedic, nurse or childcare worker! I'd like to be a Mum one day, so I need to try to partly overcome this fear. I actually haven't thrown up since I was 14, which is 9 years ago!

Thanks very much for your kind gesture Lost Girl. Bliss balls are awesome!

I have been doing uni stuff at home this week Dottie. I started getting a cold on Monday, and was feeling pretty average. Thankfully, it is hardly affecting me today. I hope your uni work has been less intense this week 🙂

Tomorrow I have two uni tutorial classes, and I'm meeting my assignment partner to discuss the poster we need to present on Friday week.

I hope everyone is well 😄

Best wishes,

SM

Hi James,

Sorry if you've already said this, but what did you study?

I started developing a cold on Monday. The night before last I was in bed by 12ish, whereas last night I didn't get to bed until 3am, which is really bad for me. I then woke up today at about 1pm, which is VERY rare.

I hope you can fight off your cold. With enough rest, keeping hydrated and eating fruit and veg, maybe your immunity will kick in 🙂

I hope you have a nice day!

Best wishes,

SM

Hi BB family,

Firstly, a HUGE welcome to James! It is so nice to see you here! Uh oh getting sick is awful. Maybe SM's cold & flu self care tips will be useful.

Dark_Unicorn, thanks ha, ha. It is interesting indeed 😊

SM, Psych causes me much more stress than Commerce to be honest- psych involves maintaining certain grades whereas Commerce has lower grade demands. Your sister's double law/Commerce degree sounds intense!

You have a phobia of vomit and I'm squeamish around blood so let's leave the paramedic work to Dark_Unicorn 😉 Hopefully you'll be able to partly overcome your fear when the time feels right for you to become a mother.

Colds are a pain but I'm glad it hasn't been affecting you too badly, SM. You sound like you're having a busy week at uni.

I hope your tute goes well and that you make headway on your group work tomorrow!

Take care one and all and speak soon 😊

Dottie

I did a Bachelors of Economics back in 2010-2012, and went back to do the honours part of that at the beginning of the year. Tough work being back there because it all turns to maths, but the implications are really interesting. I took a behavioural lens to my thesis which I started.

Apparently I can pick it up again within the next 8 years and the first semester I did this year will still count.

Hope your days are going well everyone. I'm hoping to somehow find the movie inside out and watch it. Do you think it's worth buying?

Hi James,

Economics honours sounds full-on. I'm glad your uni still counts the 1st semester if you complete it within 8 years- that must be a relief.

I haven't done much economics personally- just 2 compulsory 1st year economics units last year (introductory macro and micro). But that's it, no more econ for me for the rest of my degree ha, ha.

I love Inside Out! It's my favourite animated film of all time. But as always, movies are so subjective.

Hi!! I hope you've all been well the past few days and have been taking care 🙂

SM, I'm glad the cold isn't affecting you much anymore! I was sick recently and unfortunately many of my friends have been sick too! I do like chemistry but I'm not that good at it and it's actually the subject I'm doing the worst in out of all my subjects hahaha! It's pretty interesting and sometimes fun though, and I like my teacher, so its okay 🙂 Psychology does sound really good and it's one of the things I've been consistently interested in for a long time, so I think it is my first preference. But I'm not sure, I still feel too young and inexperienced to decide what I truly like and want to do!! There's so much talk of uni and you all sound so busy! I hope you and Dottie are both going okay with all the work and finding a good balance!

Hey dark_unicorn, it's great that you are following what you really want to do, and it sounds like you'd be a great paramedic! I'm not squeamish either and can deal with blood, vomit, etc. pretty well. I was interested in nursing, but I've heard it involves a lot of practical work from the very beginning, and I'm not sure I'm ready or suited to that. I have so, so much respect for nurses and paramedics though and I think they deserve more recognition for what they do!! It's a very physically and emotionally demanding job, but I imagine also a very rewarding one! I hope you are well and school is going okay!

Hi Dottie, I'm not really leaning towards either of the three (psych, OT and social work) at the moment. I'm just going to see how I do in terms of my ATAR and then kind of decide based on that, because I am just as interested in and passionate about all three!! Wow, commerce/psychology sounds pretty challenging. I hope you've been going well and that the work hasn't been too stressful! Out of commerce and psych, is there one you enjoy studying more than the other?

Hi and welcome James! It's great to see you here, and I hope you've been well!! I've actually seen a lot of your posts around and have been wanting to say thank you - you're such a blessing to the forums and your posts are always so well written and filled with compassion! How was doing a bachelor of economics? A lot of my friends are interested in commerce/economics and want to do something related in uni! I do economics at school and really like it and it's one of my better subjects 🙂 I haven't watched Inside Out but I've been really wanting to since it came out because everyone seems to have a similar opinion to Dottie and really like it! I'm interested to hear what you think of it as well, if you end up watching it.

I've been pretty busy lately, I'm graduating so, so soon and we've had a lot of super fun year 12 activities planned, birthdays with friends, school work, uni preparation stuff, and other school or general graduation things going on! It's been a little bit stressful with so much going on in what I thought would be a relaxing time, and I'm feeling a mixture of emotions as this part of my life ends and I move onto the next chapter! I've also been struggling a little bit mentally the past few weeks, particularly down and anxious the past few days and crying for seemingly no reason. Something feels off and I can't quite pinpoint exactly how I'm feeling, or if there is a reason, but there's been a lot happening so it may just be the confusion and stress of all that! 🙂

I hope you are all taking care and being kind to yourselves, and that you're having a nice week so far!!

Hi Ahw

Can I offer you a virtual hug first and foremost? You sound very overwhelmed.

There's so much happening at the same time; it's a lot to process. Year 12 can be such an emotionally turbulent period as it marks a certain "end" to the familiar (i.e. about 13 years of school from K-12). It can be exciting yet daunting at the same time (so here's another hug if you accept).

I remember that I was very scared and sad to finish year 12. I bawled my eyes out at my year 12 graduation (luckily most of my grade seemed to have the same idea so lots of tears that day). So even though our experiences aren't 100% identical, I have an idea where you're coming from.

No worries. It's great that you have an interest in OT, psych and social work. They can all be potentially very fulfilling areas to work in. I guess see how it goes with your ATAR. Whatever happens, just remember that you did the best you could at the time and that your ATAR doesn't define you. And we will be proud of you regardless of that number 😉

Interesting question. Thanks Ahw. I personally think psych is more interesting than Commerce. In saying that, commerce is much less stressful than psych. With the whole honours thing in psych, I'm usually very stressed about it so worrying about grades can take away from the enjoyment.

Oh and (cheeky smile), if you like economics and psych, you could consider studying commerce (with a major in economics) and do it as a double with psych? 😉

Sorry, I know you're still undecided about courses but maybe if you've such diverse interests then a double degree could work. Just a thought- feel free to consider or completely reject this thought.

Let us know how you go this week.

Speak soon 😊
