Friends Cafe - social space for members under 25

Hey! Welcome to Friends Cafe.

This is a chill and chat space for young BB members to talk about anything and everything and make new friends.

When school's getting to you, uni or work has got you down, parents, partners, friends don't understand, and especially if you're feeling alone or lonely - come and relax awhile and talk to others who know just how you feel.

Our minds can cause us trouble, but they can also be amazing things that imagine beauty, love and fun. This cafe has everything you can imagine. To start with it's, well, a cafe. So there's chairs and tables, comfy couches for flopping, a big screen tele, unlimited download on computers for games, Spotify (or an old-school jukebox if you prefer), every movie you can think of on instant demand ... whatever you want, it's here. Post and tell us what'd you'd like.

Plus, there's an infinite menu of whatever food or drinks takes your fancy. And it's all free!

To kick it off, today we have a special range of Monster Milkshakes - those thick gooey shakes topped with cronuts, chocolate bars, cake, cookies ... whatever you want. And if you can get through one of them, you're a legend (and probably feeling a little bit sick LOL!)

Welcome friends.

Hey Dottie and ahw,

Thanks for both of your good wishes 😄 This uni week started well, and it's been okay today. I have uni tutes to attend on Wednesday's and Thursday's, whereas I can watch lectures from home on Monday and Tuesday.

I am pretty busy this Fri and Sat, but I have nothing but uni planned for Sun 😛

I hope you both had a good day! 🙂

Hi SM,

I'm happy to hear that uni seems to be going well for you this week. You certainly have a busy weekend ahead of you ha, ha. I hope you make headway with your uni work on Sunday 😊

Hi,

It's early in the morning and feeling rather lonely so thought that I would post. Yes, I'm feeling lonely again- what's new?

I'm not always sure why this is the case. I'm often surrounded by friends in my offline life yet feel very much alone.

Anyway, time to crawl out of bed and listen to some lectures!

Hope you're all doing okay 😊

Hi Dottie,

I too feel lonely sometimes, even just after I see friends. I hope your weekend has been going well. I am just finishing off an essay right now. Hopefully I can also catch up on lectures today, and get other uni work done.

I am here to talk, whether about uni or life in general 🙂

Best wishes,

SM

Hello everyone!

Thank you all for your warm welcomes, and I hope that uni life is going well for those of you who are there. I recently went to a university open day and it was so cool! I can't wait to go to uni, I'm hoping to do a Bachelor of Science 🙂

Hi SM,

Thanks for empathising. Sometimes I wonder if my display name should be lonely in a crowded room ha, ha

You sound like you have been having a very productive Sunday. Hopefully you could tick off all that you planned to do today (especially the essay).

My weekend has been okay. Busy and teary at times but tolerable in a way. Saw some brochures about various events like music productions and festivals. Picked up one but then promptly put it back when I realised that realistically, I won't be attending any of them because of uni commitments, which made me feel a bit sad.

For a large chunk of the semester, it's a case of "sorry, I can't see you this weekend because I've a test" or "sorry, I can't go to (event) as I've a report due." You get the picture ha, ha.

I know that my life is very unbalanced. Definitely not something people should aspire to but what with grades to maintain, sometimes I feel as though I'm left with little choice.

Anyway, I've rambled enough. Thanks for reading!

Dottie

Hi dark_unicorn,

It's so nice to see you at the cafe again 😊

I'm glad you enjoyed the uni open day. They can be super informative and lots of fun (also lot of unis are very generous with their freebies). Are you going to any more open days?

Bachelor of Science sounds fantastic! I don't know too much about it but I think you can pick a major like geology or chemistry or something (don't quote me on it though ha, ha). I take it you really enjoy science at school?

Uni life is stressing me out if I'm honest (but that's pretty much the story of my life during semesters).

Hi Dottie! I feel lonely too sometimes, despite being surrounded by friends! All my life I've always sort of felt alone and out of place everywhere. Hope you are doing okay and that uni isn't too stressful!!

Hey dark_unicorn! I went to a uni open day recently as well! It was really helpful and a good day. I'm also pretty excited for uni, to study things I'm interested in and have more freedom! It's kind of scary as well though, I'm worried I won't be able to make any friends because I'm kind of terrible at that haha (but I'm sure it'll be fine!!) Bachelor of science sounds good, is science your favourite subject? I kind of like science as well, I do chemistry at school and it's pretty good. I think in uni (next year for me!!) I want to study psychology or occupational therapy, or maybe social work!

Hi SM!! hope you are well and have an enjoyable and productive week 🙂

Hey guys!

ahw and dark unicorn, I'm glad you're looking forward to uni! A Bachelor of Science is a great degree dark unicorn, where you can specialise in a variety of areas. The uni website should have in-depth info about this.

It's great you are good at chemistry ahw 🙂 I never did chem at school and was rubbish at it when I did one unit at uni when I started doing a Nutrition degree (which I discontinued after 6 months, after the realisation that it was not the right path). For me, I have internalised the notion that I'm incapable of doing well (or even understanding) maths or pure science (e.g. chem, physics etc.) I have always found maths difficult, so I did focus on English and other humanities subjects in high school. I have actually never tried physics at all!

I highly recommend studying psychology ahw! The subject matter is really interesting, and career prospects are consistently good. Whatever you decide to do, base the decision on what you really want/what inspires you 😄

I hope you aren't too stressed this week Dottie. It's great that you are dedicated with your uni work, but allow yourself to enjoy time off doing other activities. I find that if I just do uni work (and not social activities), I am less productive with my time. I get down and feel lonely when I can't interact with people. This is easier said than done, but it's worth slowly working towards more balance. If you want to spend time with friends, perhaps do so for a few hours rather than for a whole afternoon or night. This way you get some social time, without feeling overwhelmed. On Saturday night I left the party I attended earlier than most, because I had been out all day volunteering (roller skating and at the park with kids), so I felt like having time to just relax at home.

Thanks for the good wishes ahw🙂

I hope everyone has a nice week!

Best wishes,

SM
