Dear Hanna3

"A mother's disgrace" is for e-loan at my library so I will tack it on to the end of my current hold list. I do not read that much fiction (a lot is technical health matters) and the rest is fiction and biographies of people in the entertainment field I like/liked, "Take Just My Life" by Marlene Dietrich would be an example as would "Life on Air: Memoirs of a Broadcaster" by David Attenborough.

I get my movies mainly from eBay second hand and also from a secondhand shop near me that specialties in DVDs . All very cheap, i.e. 5 for $20

I'm not sure I'd like Shoplifters, too close to home (I was a policeman) , I think Bread and Tulips much more to my taste and will look out for it, i dunno about Antonia's Line,It may well be a unique fim wiht many virtues, however an excess of rape and death would probably be too much for me to deal with (not that I ever suffered either 🙂

If you liked the Japanese then Our Little Sister might interest you. The difference in attitude between generations in Japan. I think you can find it with subtitles in YouTube.

This is interesting

Hi Croix,

I get DVDs from places like EBay second hand too - and books from used book stores and Op Shops are often good!

Antonia's Line is actually very funny and heartwarming. Shoplifters makes you understand why they do it, and how they form a family from different people whose "real" families have pretty much abandoned them. I understand if you have to avoid some things for sure. Bread and Tulips is heartwarming and sweet and life affirming (as is Antonia's Line). Chocolat was wonderful, you probably know that one?

Dessaix talks about art, travel, philosophy, the good life, travel... he's very broad minded and interesting. I have every book he's written!

Happy reading and movie watching in the New Year!

Hi Croix,

How are you going these days? How's your health going?

I was just curious, are you still on those shakes? Have they made a difference? Just asking because I'm on my own health/ weight-loss journey and think that anyone that can stick to reducing their food intake is a power- house.

Weight loss is challenging. I heard that 20% maintain it while 80% put it back on.

Dear MM~

OK, I'll talk about weight loss. The below are just my opinions however I'm not enthusiastic.

I've been on a diet with 2 shakes to replace meals for a long tine now -18 months perhaps. I did this because I'm less able to exercise that I used to be and did not wish to have the typical weight gain you get just sitting most of the time. On the other hand I've not lost weight.

So far it has been more or less successfully in that my weight has mostly not increased. There have been a few times it did following my weakening when tempted,

This is not the same as dieting for weight loss. As far as I can see this should be medically supervised (as mine is) and at the same time is a whole-life change; an example being the Mayo Clinic Diet (This is just an example and seem sensible however I'm not necessarily endorsing it).

Trying to do this on your own without constant support is incredibly difficult and weight lost most often returns as the life style necessary gradually fades.

Companies that offer a prize that includes all your premiums for losing weight are on a winner, the vast majority of dieters will not succeeded and they profit.

Like many things I'd suggest a support group that has no financial interest.

Sorry not to sound enthusiastic, it is possible, but very hard.

Hello,

You have self control and discipline to stick to the shakes for so long. That's what I plan to do, stick to the changes I've been making this last almost month long term.
There's an app you download and connect with so many others mostly from America doing the same challenge so there's loads of free support. My mum is doing it with me so I have her support too.

But, in all honesty putting money into it ( only to get it back and lots more if I lose my 17kg in 6 mnths which I chose) has set something off inside of me. I'm eating so much better on my own. Supporting others on the app ( we write to each other, send photos, msgs etc) is also a strong influence to succeed.

I know I will do everything in my power to make this happen. I don't want to lose this money.

I do have a background working with professionals- dietitian, personal trainers and I've been a personal trainer myself ( studied some nutrition) so I'm well equipped.

I have travelled down the weight loss Rd under the guidance of professionals before so I'm really just getting back on that bike.

Hi Croix,

I had a look at the Mayo clinic diet as I'm interested in everything weight/ health related. I like their concept of doing it for the long haul.

I do believe however in mixing things up for weight loss if something isn't working.

Some people swear by intermittent fasting, the keto diet, low carb diet...there are so many out there. If u stop your diet once losing the weight and go back to your old habits of course the weight will creep back on. It's good to shock the body by doing something different but then you have to find something you can sustain long term.

I have many tips and tricks up my sleeve.
One example is drinking loads of water with squeezed lemon in it.

Anyway adding to your health and healing your body because food is medicine is possible as is losing weight, you just have to find what works for you.

I too used to drink shakes. I still have some lef

Hi again,

I obviously didn't finish my last train of thought, my phone has been freezing on me.

Anyhow I've lost weight because of new lifestyle changes and am on track to winning my money back and then some. I know I've got this in the bag.

Have a wonderful night or morning or day Croix, depending on when u get this.

Morning Croix,

I just wanted to tell u about my shake.

It was the most delicious shake I've ever had in my life!

I have a tub of chocolate Isagenix so I used a scoop of that, added a large tablespoon of natural peanut butter, a few dates, desiccated coconut, l/f milk, ice, and blended.

It was delicious!

Tasted like desert.

Anyhow hope you're as well as can be.

Dear MM

Beats 2 cups of coffee and a cigarette!

Mind you I'm talking ancient history here:)

Hey Croix,

Was browsing the forums, and was pleased to see you have a little social space of your own. Nice. 🙂

I see weight loss is the topic of the moment. You know I get a bit excited about making desserts periodically and have to rein it in now and then. I have been on the weight loss journey myself, and when I began it I was on a month's leave from work (i.e. fairly sedentary). It's irrelevant to me now as they don't cater to vegetarians, but at the time I found Light & Easy really helpful - they're not just about weight loss but maintaining healthy weight and eating a variety of proper food, not fad diets. Not especially cheap, mind you, but nutritionally balanced and I got their meals for a short period for a sense of portion sizes and made my own afterward based loosely on their menu.

I got a lot of ideas from them, most importantly to have smaller meals more often, and even have snacks - just keep the overall calories down. Most days would include a small piece of cake or a little chocolate in the fruit and nut mix, things that acknowledge cravings and don't leave you going mad from denying yourself the favourite treats, and other snacks would usually be fruit. The instruction if you were still too hungry to hold back at the end of the day was to aim for a piece of fruit before anything else.

I did actually find an overall change in my habits - once I'd reached my goal weight, my old portion sizes seemed way too big. Also I broke back how much sugar I had in my coffee over time (only had one anyway) and no longer have any. I always have fruit in the house, too, and not too many sweet snacks. Admittedly portion sizes do creep up a bit over time when you're not measuring things - if I notice my pants not fitting so well, I reduce the portions a bit, and do find myself feeling healthier for it. Oh, and if I'm bored with plain water, soda water is my best friend, I actually prefer that over soft drink these days, sometimes with a wedge of lemon or lime.

Blue.
