Hello Sleepy RX and everyone else, heating appliances aren't cheap to run, but you need to keep warm and a blanket wrapped around you isn't the same as a warm room.
Dimplex heaters are terrific and maybe a bit expensive but you can't live in continuous freezing conditions, however, what I do is get Centrelink to take out of my DSP payment (pension) every fortnight a payment you decide, such as, $60 paid directly to the power company, which means the when the bill arrives the amount payable is a vastly smaller amount.
You need to ring Centrelink and ask for 'Centrepay'.
With the smell and before you return it, place some new charcoal from a BBQ and in an open bag around or some vinegar in a bowl in several bowls, these might absorb the smell.
If you have used the dimplex, ( oil heater ) several times and you can't get rid of the smell, then perhaps change it.
The store might have a demo which has been used you can purchase, with the same warranty.
I also have a panel heater starting with N***ot which is good, and the cost to run any heater is pricy but if you pay fortnightly it's not so bad, and try the bubble wrap if you like.
