What do you do when you feel lonely at night?

I live alone. Moved back to my home city but don't really know anyone here or at least childhood friends but I don't reach out to them because I have become more socially anxious these last few years. Every night and every weekend feels so hard to live through because it's just me, in an apartment, nobody to talk to, nowhere to go, too afraid to be seen in public alone because I have nothing exciting to share with people. I'm not one to put myself out there because I just feel people don't have time for me or wouldn't want my company any more than a few minutes. I just need something to help live with loneliness but I have no idea what and thought maybe someone here has some ideas that would help me. Thanks.

Dear Obelisk84~

Welcome here to the Forum, a place where you can look around and find other people that  have had the same problem.

I grues the first thing to say is that you would be no less interesting than anyone else. The fact you find this hard -or even impossible - to believe, comes about though shyness or perhaps anxiety, not from fact.

Meeting people takes two -seems obvious, however they have to have feelings about themselves and if they want to get on will make an effort. It is not just up to you, and all the work of getting to meet and know people does not just fall on your shoulders, it is something shared, even with casual acquaintances.

From the fact you talk about evenings and weekends I suspect you may have a job, if so is the anyone there you would like to have a cup of coffee with but have been too reluctant to suggest it? If so balance being alone against some small embarrassment at asking. It may lead nowhere but is a start, a practice.

May I ask what sort of things you enjoy - or are good at? Anything at all - books, opera, swimming, .... You would know. Take that interest and see what societies or clubs are in your area , then go along to one. If it is not what you expected try another.

If you want you could try volunteering in you time off, anything from a museum to an animal refuge.

Both these last suggestions have one common factor, you meet people while doing something that has a purpose, and that is a start in itself in getting to know others.

If you would like advice then why not give our 24/7 help line a ring and see what they suggest?

Incidentally do you mind if  I ask what made you choose Obelisk as a name?
