Hell Rabb,

A warm welcome to our forums..

Im sorry your feeling depressed and anxious..

The best way to find a therapist, I feel is to reach out to your GP, and tell him/her how your feeling so depressed and anxious....I made a long appointment with my GP. and spoke honestly about my thoughts and how I felt mentally unwell....My GP..then set up a mental health care plan..Which gives you 10 free appointments with a psychologist/therapist....

Can I ask you if you have spoken to your GP...and if it’s something that you might consider....

My kindest thoughts with care dear Rabb..

Grandy

Hi Rabb,

Welcome to the forums and thank you for your post here today. We are sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling great recently with feelings of depression and anxiety. It is great that you are reaching out and looking for support, that is an incredible and brave thing to do.

We came here to say what Grandy has said! They are spot on, a GP is the best place to start on this journey.

If you feel like talking to someone before that, you can call us anytime on 1300 22 4636 and our expert team will be there to help process these feelings. You can also call our friends at Lifeline on 13 11 14 if you prefer.

Taking these first steps towards feeling better are tough and so we want to say thank you for sharing here today. You never know who will read this and feel less alone in their own struggles.

Hello Rabb, Grandy has given you the right advice and to find the right psychologist is what and how they treat you but more so it doesn't tell you whether or not the two of you will connect, that can only be done by having a session with them and talking about these issues that are causing you problems because you need to feel comfortable to be able to tell them what you haven't told anyone else about.

Best wishes.

Geoff.

Hi rabb I was given some great advice before I first started seeing my psychologist which was: it might take seeing a few before finding the right one so just keep that in mind. But if the first one is not the right one then keep going until you find the right one that you click with as I qurentee it’s so worth it if you do. My psychologist was not the actual one my gp she as the one my gp recommended when I called to make an appointment the receptionist said she was not taking on new clients. I found the one I’m seeing in the ‘find a professional’ section here on the beyondblue website and she was the first one I clicked on to get the contact information for to try to get an appointment and I was lucky enough to get a appointment for 3 weeks later and that was about mid/over mid way of September last year. Still no diagnosis yet but she has casually mentioned to me that I have depression (clinical depression, social anxiety and general anxiety.

Hi Rabb I just went and saw my first psychologist a fortnight ago. Honestly what I looked for was where would I be comfortable to travel to, is it busy near the office, how much experience does the psychologist have. I have severe anxiety and depression, so most times I leave the house I have severe anxiety. I found someone who was at a location I had been before so I didn’t have the anxiety of a new place, it is fairly quiet so I wasn’t as likely to panic and run away from to many people. And I guess because I am new to this I feel more comfortable going to someone with lots of experience because I feel more comfortable.
so maybe work out what will make it easier for you to go to the psychologist, because let’s face it, it’s really nerve racking. I hope my advice helps and best of luck
