Terrified of vomiting

Hi there

I guess I'm just needing to get off my chest just how bad my anxiety has become over the fear of vomiting. I'm 28 and have 2 kids. I feel like it's been an issue for me for the last 3 years and it's just getting worse n worse. To the point I get scared to take my kids out places in case they happen to get a tummy bug and then I get it too. It's literally ruining my life and theirs. If we do go out somewhere especially around other kids, I'm on edge for the next 2 days just waiting for them to get sick. It's been a long time since I've vomited but I still cant get past the fear. I panic thinking i cant breathe and i might die. I wonder about if i was to get sick how am i supposed to look after my kids. I want to be able to take them to fun places without this constant dread and panic. I have told some family about my issue but I don't think they understand just how bad it really is for me.

Hi Kiah and welcome to the conversation Jill.

Although it isn't good that you feel as you do Jill it is great that you've sought help and are sharing your experience with meds with Kiah.

As I understand it meds take a week or two at least to start having an effect but every person is different and we will not respond the same way and the types of meds are different too. It can help to ask your pharmacist for more information specific to the medication you're taking.

Keep in mind that medications are trial and error. If you find you aren't responding after the approximates for your specific medication go back to your GP and let them know. I tried different dosages and a few medications before finding one that works for me. It is frustrating but important to focus on caring for yourself as well as you can and asking your loved ones for support and care.

Kiah you asked how I feel about vomiting. (I'm ok unless I cannot get my breath). But fever is another story altogether. It is hard to sleep because I need to keep checking on my kids.

As I mentioned it is the lack of control that makes me panic most so I do whatever I need to keep reasonably calm.

Before meds this meant sleeping on the floor of the kid's bedrooms if they were sick. Now I set myself alarms instead during the night.

In terms of vomiting what can you control? You can make sure you have rehydration salts in your first aid kit. If you worry about vomiting in public you can get vomit bags and keep some in the car, handbag or at work along with baby wipes and a spare toothbrush and paste and even change of clothes.

I hope you are both coping ok tpday.
