Sleep

I am having big problems with anxiety, but after seeing my GP my meds have been increased and just last night and today I think I felt a shift for the better. One thing in particular on my mind just now though is that while I am lucky to be able to sleep at night my body wants to sleep in day hours as well. Can anyone give me feedback please ? Is a lot of sleep good in recovery, or in some way is it self-defeating, or good or bad in some other way I haven’t thought of ? I can’t think we’ll so any help would be good, thankyou.

Hey SYT and welcome to our caring community;

What you've experienced prior to feeling some relief, was absolutely harrowing for your body/mind. It takes so much energy to get thru the day, any respite from this will be felt on all levels. So please don't be concerned ok.

Sleep and rest will serve you well in any form to help you cope, as your system's equipped to deal with stress so much better than without it.

On a chemical level, your body's learning to adapt to a new medication routine so it's normal to go thru periods of adjustment.

It sounds to me like things are on the up and up. I'm happy for you because I know too well what it's like. I welcome any thoughts you have, or if you want to purge yourself of pent up worries or emotions I'm here to listen; that's what the forum's for...

Take care until we talk next. I hope I've helped.

Sez

Thank you Sara

i will reply to your post very soon and will look forward to your reply or a reply from anyone else. I’m grateful

Hi SYT

I used to take my AD's at 5pm then crash at 9pm and sleep like a baby till early morning. Chat with your GP about choosing times to take them.

Sara thank you for your post and encouragement - I have read it several times and will again. Like anyone else on this forum my situation is long & complicated. What has happened recently may seem like something to be just shrugged off to some people but for me it has been, as you say, harrowing, I know why I have reacted this way - big buttons from the past being pushed. I have felt absolutely gutted, terribly hurt, enormously disappointed, bewildered, confused, lost, lonely etc about what happened. I’ve understood that I need time to move past this & that it takes time for an increase in medication to kick in. But I have been feeling SO bad that I have been frightened that I’m on a downward spiral & won’t get back up again. I’ve been frightened about coping with the future. I still am in fear of those things.

I have so little energy & not eating much makes it worse, but I still have to go to the supermarket & do other things myself. I have nobody to do these things for me. Sleeping and/or resting so much in the daytime means that I lose physical fitness as well. I said that “just last night and today I think I felt a shift for the better” but I need several more days of that feeling to feel confident I am getting stronger. I find it so hard to be going thru all this and not be getting the daily support and hugs I need that would make so much difference.

Thanks for being there Sara

Thank you Tony for your reply. My GP says the meds I’m on should not make me sleepy. He said he thinks it’s the emotional energy I’m burning up that’s doing it. I do get good sleep at night (because I go to bed exhausted) but it’s never enough.

Hi again SYT;

I'm so glad my post helped. I totally understand where you're at ok. Life can suck at the best of times, so when something challenging occurs, your MH issues amplify responses and worry to make coping that much harder.

Some AD's such as the one I'm on can interfere with sleep, so I take it in the mornings. I've been on them for 4 yrs now and tbh, I don't think my body knows the difference anymore.

Being able to sleep now tells me your brain's liking the increase in med's. We tend to view 'thinking' as being the problem, but it's our chemical make-up that rules the roost.

MH disorders like anxiety, cause physical symptoms, fog brain, lack of concentration, difficulty making decisions or an inability to cope with concerns we might otherwise breeze thru.

This is caused by the central nervous system being damaged by too much stress or trauma. It either shuts down, (a breakdown) or works ineffectively like a car's battery that needs changing, or worn spark plugs.

It's like any injury; it takes time, attention and rest to recover. Damage to our brains and CNS is physically real, not imaginary like some people might think. I remember when I had my breakdown, I'd talk psychotic rubbish to people thinking they'd understand. In essence, my brain was broken.

My advice is to reduce stress any way you can. That means saying 'no' to family/friends and staying away from situations that might lead to stress. If you can't fix something, let it go. Worrying over things you aren't involved in, or helping others get over their worries needs to stop while you recuperate. Being 'selfish' is absolutely necessary ok.

If you find yourself being irrational, don't try to push thru it; please ask for help. I need to ask; have you been having suicidal ideations or self harming? Know this site is safe, private and non judgemental. Talking on here about these issues is promoted to help you move forward thru your recovery.

If you want to, please put a 'TRIGGER WARNING' at the beginning of your post to alert others in case they might be triggered by reading your words, as this sometimes happens.

I hope I haven't overwhelmed you. Please keep talking ok.

Warmth;

Sez

Just a quick reply Sez because now is the time for me to be relaxing, not thinking all the hard stuff. I did want to say though that I am not suicidal. I think it must take guts, amongst other things of course, to do that and I haven’t got that sort of guts. I’ve had a variety of very tough times in my life (some very good too) but overall I am a survivor.

I do want to thank you for your support and concern Sez. It’s so good to know there are caring people like you. Thank you 😘

Sez in case you haven’t seen it, I just want you to know that I posted on the “Do you love yourself” thread in the last couple of days and one of them included this ...

“Today I have read JustSara’s posts from 31/7/16 on this thread. You wrote with so much feeling Sez and it was very touching for me to read. I’m so happy for you that you had the experience of truly knowing what receiving true love feels like.”

I found myself remembering my ‘Grandma’ - I was only 6 when she died so I don’t remember much at all really, but I do know that she loved me too.

thank you for your support Sez - I am having an ok day today, compared to last weeks at least. 😘

Thankyou so much; what a nice post to find. It's late atm, but I'll get to the 'loving yourself' thread when I can. In the meantime, have a lovely Easter. In fact, I'll say specifically you can eat yourself into a chocolate coma! 😛
