Ruminating

I always feel anxious waiting for a response back from someone. Recently, I was talking to one of my closest friends and I wanted to share how much I enjoy talking to them and how I want us to do that more. After sharing that, I didn’t hear back. What’s unusual is that I usually get a response in the morning but not this time.

We work together and that morning, they engaged with me normally on teams and seemed fine. I didn’t bring up what I said the night before or why there’s no reply. We spoke again as work ended and I asked if we can chat tonight and they said they’re not around tonight. I felt like something was wrong and I couldn’t place it. I message again outside of work asking if I have done something but I haven’t heard back.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with sharing your appreciation of a friend and how much you cherish them, but doing so left me feeling vulnerable when I didn’t hear back. I’m not sure what to do or if I have done something wrong. I’m lost and I’m spiralling in my head going through the worst scenarios imaginable about what this could mean going forward.

Hi and welcome to the forums,

Thank you for sharing what's been going on.

It sounds like you've been caught in that difficult space between not knowing what's happening and trying to make sense of it. When someone is important to us, a change in communication can leave a lot of room for worry and self-doubt to creep in.

From what you've written, it sounds like your friend continued to engage with you normally at work, which may be worth keeping in mind while you're finding yourself imagining worst-case scenarios. At the moment, it doesn't sound as though you have any clear indication that you've done something wrong.

You also mentioned feeling vulnerable after sharing how much you value the friendship. Opening up in that way can take courage, and it's understandable that not receiving a reply has left you feeling unsettled.

Hopefully some of our community members can share their own experiences with overthinking and waiting for a response from someone they care about.

Thanks again for posting, and feel free to let us know how things unfold. Kind regards,
Sophie M
