hi everyone! i’m planning on adopting my first cat soon (so excited!!) and i’ve been doing research, but i’d love to hear some real advice from actual cat parents.
i’m looking for recommendations on the best cat food for indoor cats: something that’s healthy, helps with hairballs, and keeps them at a good weight. wet food? dry food? both? brands you trust?

Hi Aneeta-Karan,
This just happens to be something I have been doing some serious research on and I would like to share with you the results.
I read your previous post, how did things go with your senior cat?
I lost my beautiful companion about 15 months ago and have been missing the feline companionship so I recently took in two senior cats that needed a new home.
Foods that you should avoid are dry foods, this should be used only sparingly and even then it should be a very good premium dry food. I settled on Lifewise for the dry food as one of them likes a bit of dry food but he only gets about quarter of a cup each day.
As for the rest of the diet, cats need meat as their main source of food. Raw food is ideal but again, not just any raw food. For a balanced meal they need 90% meat and 10% offal (liver, kidney, heart etc). If you look at the ingredients on most cat food, a lot of it is fillers to make it cheap and those fillers can do the cat more harm than good.
These are the things I have on hand for them
Applaws wet food - has only a few ingredients, is relatively affordable and easy to find (however, this is not a balanced meal and should not be used as the only food they get)
Ziwi Peak wet food - this is one of the best canned cat foods and is a balanced meal but is expensive so I use in small amounts.
Sardines in Water - these can be used as a treat or mixed in with food or you may have somewhere near you that has frozen or fresh raw sardines. Oily fish like sardines are good for their skin and coat but should only be used in small amounts - eg. one sardine per day.
Raw and Fresh raw balanced meal - this particular company may not be available for where you are but have a look at the website to get an idea of what you should be looking for in a raw diet.
Unfortunately fur balls are just part of having a cat, but you can help by brushing the lose fur from their coat regularly so they are not swallowing as much when washing themselves. Being on the right diet will also help to a degree.
I hope this helps and I hope you enjoy your new feline companion.
