Physical sensations

Hi all. Can any of you (please) explain these physical sensations I sometimes get when I feel anxious or down. As background, I have trauma, anxiety and depression.

It is an unpleasant physical sensation that runs through my body at times when my mood is low. It's not pain. It's not nausea. It's something I can only describe as feeling like a toxic chemical running through me. I feel it from head to toe and, when experiencing it, I just want to lay down, close my eyes, and do nothing. It feels awful. I had it this morning and, after a forced workout at the gym, it cleared. I thought it might be adrenaline but that primes you into action, the opposite of what I feel.

Many thanks

Hi Rod_NR93

the physical sensations you mention are common yet I remember feeling the same in my 20's and it was revolting

Can I ask if you felt overwhelmed during this physical sensation? Just from my own experience adrenaline is an excellent tool yet it can also kick in when we have too much on our plate at work...school or in our personal lives as well

An excellent indicator of our well being is the quality of our sleep....or lack of for that matter. Can I ask if you wake up during the night when you are sleeping?

just a polite note....the forums are a safe and non judgmental place for you to post 🙂

my kind thoughts

Paul

Thanks Paul. I feel overwhelmed in the sense of feeling stuck. Sleep is ok. It happens most on weekends when my day is less structured.

No worries Rod_NR93

You are very proactive with your health with attending gym...Good1 I used to have bad anxiety due to trauma as well and your physical sensations would be more than understandable. I still see my doc every 6 weeks for a fine tune

Did you feel really fatigued and drained this morning prior to your workout? No response is required/expected unless you wish to Rod

we are listening

Hi Rod_NR93

Being sensitive enough to feel your mind and chemistry working through physical sensations can be incredibly stressful when you don't quite know what's going on, what it is you're actually feeling. For example, you could say 'I can literally feel adrenaline kicking in', you know that intensely hyperactive feeling that rushes through your body. Strange but you can also be left feeling a lack of chemistry. Can remember during post natal depression what a lack of oxytocin (bonding or 'love' hormone) felt like. It was a dull and empty feeling through the whole of my body. I had no sensations of 'a spark' (of interest) in my babies when they were born. It felt like nothingness. So, one could say with feeling the lack of oxytocin it was like 'Just not feeling the love'.

With the work out, I can't help but wonder whether you found it relaxing in some way. Looking at a 'work out' from 2 different perspectives, 1) we can go to the gym in the morning to work out that feeling of being too relaxed after getting out of bed, so our body becomes naturally more active for the day, or 2) we can go at the end of a stressful or tense day to work out (vent) the tension that's built up. Some people may even go to the gym because that's naturally where they work out their problems, it's where they find the most inspiration comes to mind for them. You could say their workout is like a healthy form of natural meditation in some way.

Maybe the gym/work out visits could become a conscious and structured way of trying to naturally manage your mind and body. Playing around with what's the best time to go, under what circumstances you need to go and how often it serves you best to go may take a bit of trial and error before discovering what begins to make positive noticeable difference. Each time you find what works, you'll literally feel it.

I should add, once I became a little more tuned into different sensations or feelings throughout my body, it became easier to identify what works and what doesn't in certain cases. It can be a little strange too. I can remember on one occasion feeling the strangest sensation after feeling my body becoming completely light and relaxed. I felt kind of naturally doped up. It then hit me 'What the heck? I think this is what people refer to as 'feeling an overwhelming sense of peace'. It was the 1st time I'd ever felt it. Then I thought 'Aha! This is why people take drugs (to get that physical feeling).'

🙂
